I am hoping for 1.50 - 2 dollars a dozenCongrats, Oz! Mine started laying last week, at 20 weeks of age. We're in the "peewee" to "medium" size eggs phase for large egg laying birds, and now up to 5 eggs a day. Just got our first 40 gram egg this morning (57 is average for large eggs), and they're progressively getting larger. I have 13 pullets at this age. Seven more that are 4 weeks younger. So, hopefully, soon, we'll be up to that capacity, daily, as you are.
Are you going to sell the excess to the locals? I already have a list of folks interested in buying mine, lining up, now that they know that my birds are laying. They go for $7/dozen here for free-range, cage-free, farm-fresh eggs.
I feed all clears back as hard boiled then mashed eggs. I eggtopsy all quitters after lock down and toss them.I have a question. I think I have read posts that alluded to this..... If ya'll have eggs that go beyond 23+ days in the incubator, or if they are obviously clear and don't make it into lockdown, do you hard boil or scramble the eggs and feed them to your flock? Or are they trash? If it's OK/safe to feed them to the flock, is there anything I need to watch out for? I have a bunch of clears that I paid $$ for that I hate the idea of pitching them in the trash.
Thanks in advance for your answers!
After that long in the incubator, I would pitch them. It's just not worth the risk if there is any bacteria in the egg, which could account for the non-development. If you want to get some value out of them, blow them out and use them for crafts.I have a question. I think I have read posts that alluded to this..... I know! But that's what they're going for! And surprisingly, there is a HUGE market for farm-fresh eggs here. The ones that provide them, sell out every week, easily. I know of two family-owned farms that sell them, as well as local farmer's markets. One of the family-owned farms even delivers them to the military based families at Minot AFB, as well as to others in Minot who contact them. They're on FB, so I keep track of that info, because I'm a branch manager of a FB page for North Dakota homesteaders. Can't go into details here about it, but if you're interested in more, PM me.$7/dozen? I GIVE my eggs away! If I could get $7 a dozen, I would keep 50 laying hens!![]()
