The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

Thank you Wisher. I am not sure why but I still have one in the shell moving but not hatched and the 2 hatched yesterday and one at 3 am. So I am still waiting to see if this one hatches. One tried to pip but it shrink wrapped. My bator kept going up on temp! I kept getting up and turning it down.
I just put my Blue Andalusians in Lock Down as I only have one turkey egg that has anything in it. I am very excited about these eggs! They are all moving and developing nicely!

YAY, Chicka! Successful hatches! I was surprised yesterday afternoon... Day 26, and both my turkey eggs had external pips! They've both hatched this morning... today is Day 27. My older turkey did the same thing... hatched 1 day earlier than planned, but none of the rest of that hatch made it.

Quote: OK KT-- Now that I have read this, I am still sceprticle. ( spelling!) Umm, I worked at a bigg shipping compoany, as in catalog company that shipped 100's of thousands of packages,a nd boss often went to visit with the post master--- I can tell you there are workers that even the bosses will not tamper with. NO matter what they are doing-- afterall where did " going postal" come from????

I'm will to try the labeling , IF it means the insurance end will apply as I have been told numerous times byt he PO it does not apply to eggs.
( YEs, I am frustrated. lol).

Just from talking to my local post mistress, I think these days any changes in QC are coming from peer pressure. While in the past many just let things slide and shrugged their shoulders, today many of the employees realize that if the PO doesn't improve its service, the PO will go under and they will be out of jobs. The PO is a good gig if you can get it. But it can't hurt for us to insure our eggs and keep the pressure on through investigations of the claims. Especially if the insurance is included now, we can make a lot of waves with the claims even if we never recover anything.

Quote: I made a claim last summer that was just a rediculous farse. In customer service I would giv e it a big fat zero on a 1-10 scale. My argument was that since the USPS supplied the shipping boxes, the boxes should with stand the shipping treatment. I talked until I was blue in the face for 15 minutes on my nickel!!! THen only got the shipping, not the tracking and not the eggs re-imbursed. That left a foul taste in my mouth about the USPS. Maybe the USPS does nteed to stream line down to the bestter emplyees and send the others to the . . . oh wait , there are no other job openings these days.

Yes, I am jaded. lol

I would be afraid that the eggs would not get enough oxygen being in bubble wrap and inside a plastic egg and all the rest of the packing around and on top of them.

The eggs go into a suspended mode when they are cold after being laid. They do develop slowly but not that much.

Look up the Skyline method of packing the eggs--the ends are open so there is some air there that would be trapped int the openings. Using the Skyline method, nuggets or shredded paper and double boxing is the best way to ship.

On a side note, I posted pictures of hatching eggs packed in saw dust. I had to brush the saw dust off of the eggs, which would be a big time blocker of air. Those eggs hatched into:
