The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

It is just that having THAT many oozing spots on THAT many eggs, all from the same shipper.....give me the willies.

There was only one egg in that lot where I could see veins. The eggs are pretty light brown, easy enough to see in.

TOTALLY up to you! If they give you the willies, toss them! I don't pull eggs too quickly, I've seen too many hatch that I thought wouldn't. I always toss seepers and stinkers, though............. I only toss clears, early quitters, and blood rings at lockdown. Everything else stays unless it stinks or seeps.

Well, they do not have micro cracks...that my eyes can still see... (They kinda glow with the flashlight)

Do you think I should throw away ALL of the eggs from that shipper, even the ones without spots?
No, but watch the rest of them.

You may still get some to hatch. I have before and I think the damage to the egg often has to do with the position of the eggs in the box.

There is hope!

OK, i tossed some, and kept one maybe seeping one, that looked like it maybe wasn't clear, but I put it in a corner of the incubator, and if it clearly seeps it will get tossed.

I did a thorough candling of ALL of my eggs and tossed some OBVIOUS dead in shell. I am leaving early tomorrow, and not coming back until late Sunday, and want to not have nightmares of exploding eggs while I am gone.

I left two iffies, the one maybe seeping and then one that I thought was OK at candle, but then right now I wondered if it smelled a bit, or if I am imagining things.

Anyway, both of those are in a corner, surrounded by clean paper towels, and a responsible child will check them every day while I am gone and smell the one, and check for seeping on both.

Have a good trip!

I'm sure there are better places to post this question, but I've been reading this thread for weeks and feel like I know you guys and respect your knowledge. I'm hoping to get some BCM, Welsummer and Cream Leghorn eggs to hatch; locally if I can find them, shipped otherwise - if I can find someone who will pack them in a manner similar to what I've learned here

. I was then going to fill out my incubator with my own eggs. I have several sweet EE ladies and a gorgeous EE roo. BUT he is the brother, half-brother and son to most of my girls. Is this a problem? Certainly would be with some other animal breeding, but I've heard in passing people talking about their son/brother being used but no one addressing it directly. Thoughts?

It's usually not a problem. Chickens can take a lot of inbreeding.

It is not a problem. EEs have good genetics anyway. They will be fine.

Look up a breeding chart for inbreeding. Let me know if you do not find one and I will get one to you. If you breed according to the chart, you can take a breeding trio or quad and keep them closed for up to 20 years.

Has anyone here heard that Bresse hatch better after shipping than most other breeds? Just curious. Someone who sent me 9 eggs said that had been her experience, I moved 7 to the hatcher, and this morning 1 had hatched and 3 others were pipped - today is Day 21.
