The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

I just received two different shipments of eggs from Florida and New York. Both had each egg wrapped individually in bubble wrap, then then those eggs wrapped in another layer of bubble wrap. then in a box with lots of newspaper and bubble wrap. Both boxes were labeled as fragile, but the one had a sticker on the outside calling attention to the live eggs and not to x-ray the box.

Not sure that means anything or not, but I was very happy for the first time purchasing shipped eggs. The eggs made it in great physical condition....now we will see if they will produce.

I wonder if it does matter if they put something like that on the box? My post lady was surprised that my egg box was not marked at all. Just with Fragile. She said that was the first time she had ever seen one that was not marked. I hope you have a super hatch!

The shipper you refer to says she does not put anything on them as far as them being eggs, animals, etc. Personally I think that is a mistake! When I requested how I wanted them marked she said she wouldn't do that.

Dan - I have not marked any of my boxes with anything other than a request to call the recipient for pick up. I feel it is just too tempting for the occasional Neanderthal that might have a chance to handle it. I'm not saying that EVERY postal worker would be tempted, just that I didn't want any extra attention brought to my package.

BTW - none of my boxes arrived with excess damage and most were pristine. The postal clerks have a spiel they ask when you ship here. They ask if anything is breakable, could leak, fragile, hazardous, etc. I always say it is somewhat fragile but I don't want it marked. I have only had one that was surprised and ask why. I said that I found that the boxes arrive in better shape if they are not marked. She looked bewildered and said "That's unfortunate." I smiled sweetly and said, "It's okay, not all postal employees are as conscientious and helpful as you are." She smiled a knowing smile and processed my package, as is.

That's Good to know! I will hope for the best upon arrival. I had eggs shipped Priority last month from AZ. It took them 8 days to arrive in IL. They set in Phoenix for 4 days without moving. The Eggs I have lined up to be shipped on 4-29 are all coming Express Mail. I'll see how that works out.

Someone told me it was cheaper to buy eggs than chicks. Honestly I don't see it is. I think I could buy SQ chicks and still save money, but I want to have the ability to set my own eggs someday. So I am giving it another try.

70% of the 1st eggs I got shipped in were scrambled. Not Good! I am hoping for better results this time around.

I got the Dickey 2X2. Fired it up last night, put the Spot check at the middle of egg tray. After I set the back up wafer thermostat at 102F I set the electronic thermostat to hold on 99.3F. It holds rock solid! The Humidity will take a little playing with, vents, water level, etc., but I should have it lined out. Mr. Dickey suggested 55%RH and I got it at that just wondered if I should try to get it a little lower?

The Dickey is built like a tank and you could not talk to a nicer guy. The Brinsea had outstanding technology but the plastic piece on the turner that failed took all my confidence with it. Brinsea NEVER did bother returning my call. The place I bought it took care of me and refunded 100% upon receipt.

I usually ask when I purchase eggs to NOT label the package in any way. I do this for the same reason as wisher. The only time it was labeled they were delivered to the wrong post office box, heavily damaged and leaking. The wrong post office that received it did not want to forward it because it looked so bad. I had a tracking number and called, They told me that they were keeping it there because it was so messy and I needed to come get it. Since then, no labeling and so far...knock on wood...they have been good.
