The great yolk color debate

i must have hit a button accidently and posted nothing. oh well. my girls don't like basil. it's the only plant they DON'T eat in their garden :( i was inspired by this post and made my girls a treat. i used cayenne pepper, paprika, and basil. i ll let you know the outcome! thanks for all the great advice.

It's totally free ranging, and in my experience, the hens that spend all day outside free ranging have the darkest yolks and the hardest egg shells. They don't all spend all day outside...some stay closer to the barn...and it never fails, the ones that spend more time indoors have lighter yolks and flimsier shells. That is just the way it is.

18% protein feed. Daily assortment of enrichments.
I give a protein (meat) a grain (oats, wildrice) fruit (tomatoes, grapes) and fresh greens. Just examples and I get orange colored yolks daily from all my hens.
