The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Nice birds. I will try to get pictures of the one we discussed tomorrow. I spent five hours this morning processing my first meat birds, and I am off to work on post holes before leaving early so they are stuck in the covered section of run today since the open section is not done yet. I can't trust I can get them back in in an hour if I let them out. Have a great weekend.
Thanks, daxi. I breezed through the forum earlier and saw your posts about processing birds. Congratulations. Hope you get the plucked situation sorted out. I'm looking forward to some pics of your bird(s). Did you say they were Horstman birds? He has a good line of HRIR...

Speaking of fence posts, I have to pick some up today so I can build a pen for the new coop...

You have a great weekend too, daxi!!!

Now that I have all of the welded wire up in the pens I have to add a couple of pens for the new coops. I'm going to use metal posts. This is the side I have to build another pen on. I will use the existing fence as I recently replaced the wire as my inside fence so I have to move my electrical predator wire and plumb the new coop to hook up the auto waterer.

The hose will be moved to the other side of the new coop. This picture was taken before we moved the new coop over here. I'm going to bury PVC for the water. We also have a compost pile over here so we use the hose to put water on the compost pile.

Hmm, I'll have to try some wheat grass myself. I don't have a garden cleared out(hopefully in a couple years I will)so I will have to do it in planters. I have grown wheat grass before and it seems very hardy. I personally don't care for it, but hey, if the chickens benefit from it, I benefit from it too.

My hubby just planted some Egyptian Wheat. The quail love it. I'll try it for the chickens too. It is kind of late to plant it but we will see how it goes.
You can grow it indoors without soil. Rinse the seeds a couple of times, then let them soak overnight. Rinse a couple more times, and let them sit about 12 hours. Repeat the last step once again, then drain and spread the seeds on a flat tray. Water lightly twice a day, and it will grow as long as it has sufficient light. The shelves that you have your brooder on would make an excellent rack for holding several trays. If you start a new tray every few days, you'll have unlimited wheat grass. There are lots of videos on YouTube showing how easy it is...

I went to TSC this evening to buy different feeds to feed my chicks. When I got there, I found a product I'd never seen before. It looks like it may already have the mixture I'm looking for... without the fuss.

This is what I have my chicks on right now:http://www.purinamills.com/backyard-poultry/products/start-grow/

That, however, appears to be much better. It has 6% higher protein with amino acids. Now, mine are about 6 weeks right now so I couldn't feed that exact feed, but I might have to switch to a dumor ration such as that. I don't think its too late to switch.
My chicks are also 6 weeks old. Start and Grow Medicated is what I used for all my hatchery chicks, and even these reds when they first hatched. After a couple of weeks of this, I switched to DuMOR Starter/Grower because it has 20% protein. If I had known about the 24% DuMOR Chick Starter before now, they would have been on it since day 1. Show Gold Trio Chick Starter has 26% protein for show birds ages 1 day to 6-7 weeks. Show Gold Chicken Grower Pellets has 21% protein and is for ages 6-7 weeks through final show dates... which I assume is late fall. Since my chicks were on 18% - 20% protein for the first 6 weeks, they may be a little behind in development. I'll use this feed for a few weeks to allow them to "catch up"...

My older (hatchery) birds now have free choice of Purina Layena pellets and DuMOR Starter/Grower, and it's made a world of difference in their appearance. I don't know how old my laying hens are (mature when bought), while my 5 Barred Rock pullets are 6 months old. They have all filled out, their feathers have never looked better, and egg production has increased. Out of 10 layers, I'm averaging 6-8 eggs daily. I know 2 of my older birds aren't laying, but I'm not sure which ones. Since they were our first, the wife has instructed me to let them live out their lives in peace. I'd rather get something in return for feeding and housing the boogers, but what she says goes...

Quote: Hubby tilled an area with one of his tractors and tiller and already planted it. He planted it more for the quail. They like to get in it and when it's ready to harvest the seed heads will bend over and the quail can eat it. We are thinking of selling this tractor and several implements including the 6' tiller. You can't really see it in the picture, but sitting in front of the tractor is a 6' bush hog. We also have a 3 pt chipper/shredder an chain harrow with a lift. We are getting old and my husband has Parkinson's. He can still get on this tractor and his John Deere front end loader but he uses the John Deere mostly so we will keep it. We also have a 1952 Farmall Cub he restored we are also thinking about selling..

For this tractor we have cultivators, discs, belly mower. This was set up for cultivating and hilling corn. It's on the trailer because I took it to a antique tractor show.

I kind of got off track on this post but the area hubby planted the Egyptian Wheat is pretty large.
