The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Are you sure it was only the Alpha roo? If the RC was at the bottom of the pecking order, any one of the higher ranking birds could have gotten the massacre started. All it takes is one drop of blood and the attacking will be relentless.

As hard is it is to accept losing your RC, I would leave the Alpha in there for now keeping an eye on the flock. You may have a huge mess on your hands when you remove him. It's a delicate balance especially when you have so many roo's together. Also now is the time to keep an eye on the "NOW" lowest ranking bird.

Yes, I am leaving them together. I am unsure which one started it, but when I arrived it was only the Alpha roo finishing the job. The others were just around the corner, all together.

I will do as you advise me, and keep the Alpha with the group. My girls are all in the Layers coop, and these boys are just now becoming interested in joining them. I will get rid of some Friday, so hopefully that will solve some of the problem. I will keep an eye on the new lowest pecking order cockerel. Thank you for your help.

If you get good heritage Rhode Island Reds form a breeder, yes they will go broody.

Would sandhill have good broody RIRs?
