He is a good guy and a lot of fun to be around. He is like one of our old buddies Jim Buccanan who traveled with us in the 1960s at kids to all the shows in the Pacific Northwest. bob

Old Type Rhode Island Red chicken
Ark of Taste Products > Old Type Rhode Island Red chicken
The rich, reddish-black plumage and red comb of the "Old-Type" Rhode Island Red chicken is an iconic symbol of American agriculture. It is a successful dual-purpose bird, and an excellent-tempered farm chicken, with a highly productive brown egg-laying rate. Since the 1940's, the Rhode Island Red has been selectively bred for more efficient egg production, becoming smaller, lighter colored, and less broody as a result. Of greatest conservation interest are the "Old-Type" Rhode Island Reds, which are larger, darker, and more broody. The "Old-Type" Rhode Island Red chicken has an incredibly rich flavor that is most appropriate for (and best released in) stews

Well thank you, Punky. It is so nice of you to share that with us.

I bet you are a really good kid, too. The kinda kid that a mentor would be proud to encourage and watch grow. I wish I had the skill to mentor........ Keep up the good work, Punky ..... keep questioning, researching, and learning.

Rhode Island Whites are very rare. I think only the hatcheries have them. They never got off the ground in the old days. They where never related to Rhode Island Reds and like so many old Heritage breeds they where to difficult to breed and maintain thier traits. You can cross a white rock onto a White Wyandotte and get some ok ones. A freind of mind two years ago took one of my White Rock large fowl males and crossed them onto some hatchery White Wyandottes and produced on of the best Rhode Island Whites I ever say. My male had a very low top line like a Red and the Wyandottes did not have a very high top line either.

They are a Heritage breed as they where in the 1964 Standard of Perfection that I have. Thats good enough for me.
