The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

They are a couple of days past 2 weeks old now. I built a larger brooder. It's 2ft. X 6 ft and 18" deep. I just went and checked and when sleeping there is a big dog pile of birds and a couple scattered just outside the pile. They have a ton of room to move away from the heat, and they are moved away from a direct line of it. I'm using the 125 watt infared white light bulb. I think for future flocks, I'm going with a ceramic bulb.
Okay, as long as they have a way to get away from the heat, everything should be good. While they're a bit expensive, I highly recommend brooder plates. I just ordered 2 11"x11" Sweeter Heaters (on sale at MPC) for my upcoming broods. I have an 11"x16" that works fantastically, but needed a couple of smaller units to handle the small weekly batches I'll be hatching.

Sorry what is MPC, I have heard lots of good things about the Sweeter Heaters from the Chicken Whisperer. I'm just terrified to burn down a building with these silly cheapo lights. The ceramic heating bulbs won't burn down the building.

I have used a melon box with wire over it and set a heat lamp with a 75 watt incandescent bulb. Works well. I do cover it with a sheet to help hold the heat in somewhat.

I compared a 1938 Standard of Perfection to the 2016 Standard of Perfection, and the biggest differences were shade of red (brilliant red in older standard, and dark red in newer), and tail angles (older says 40 degrees for males and 30 degrees for females, and newer says 20 degrees for makes and 10 degrees for females). Otherwise, the older standard online will get you in the ballpark.

Thanks very much. I wonder why they felt the need to change the tail angles, as well as the color to Dark Red, or a Brilliant Red. I think they need to convert to Pantone color codes lol.

Many thanks, T

Congratulations Matt on your wins. I didn't have any champions but placed well. I'm happy with that. I sold all of my sale birds so now I can finally finish getting my breeding pens sorted out.
