The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hello all, I have some Dick Horstman Single Comb RIRs about to hatch. Any tips on early sexing? Pin feathers? Color traits? I have read a few articles on RIR sexing, but those are mostly hatchery reds in question.... Thanks,
Steve

Large Fowl or Bantams? I raise Rose Comb large fowl RIR's that I got from Dick a few years ago. The best way for me to tell is that the females tail feathers tend to start growing out before the males do.

Dick also raises RIR bantams. I thought he was phasing out his large fowl and concentrating more on his bantams the last time I talked to him. Just curious.

They are large fowl. They are chicks I hatched out last year. Shortly after the chicks start to develop their wing feathers, the females tails will be more noticeable then the males. The males butts will be more rounded and the females more pointy. Just my opinion. Also the female chicks have primary wing feathers that are significantly longer than the coverts. The male chicks have primary wing feathers that are shorter, about the same length as the coverts. I always get pretty much a 50/50 hatch.

Sorry, the chick pictures are not chicks from any of Dick's line, they are from the Reese/Mohawk line I got started with, birds I got from Matt Ulrich. I just wanted to show the tail feathers.

These are my reds that I finally found after much searching. They are of no particular line, just an old guy who raised and bred them for many years
