The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hi we been breeding polish but having trouble with the chicks when coming out of incubator.not knowing why chicks dont survive
That question is better suited for the Incubation and Hatching thread, but there are e things that have to be right for hatching. Temperature needs to consistent. Humidity needs to be in the right range. Oxygen must be available.

The first things you need are "accurate" thermometers and hydrometers. Close doesn't count. When the eggs are in lockdown, remove any plugs so fresh air can get into the incubator. A piece of advice I would offer is to candle the eggs before you lock them down. Find a chart for air cells at different stages of incubation. If the air cells are small on day 18, run the humidity at 50-60%. If the air cells are large, you should raise the humidity to 70-80%. If they look normal, 60-70% is what I use. Also, you should see movement in the egg when you candle on day 18. If not, there's no need to keep it. Days 1 though 18, make sure the eggs are turned at least 3 times each day and each night... preferrably 6 times or more. If they aren't turned enough, the yolk can become stuck to the shell and prevent the chick from being able to move into the hatching position. Once they are in lockdown, don't move them, and give them room to move around. Just my 2c...

I just loaded the incubator with more eggs. Since I have sent out quite a few eggs, I send out the newest and freshest and the older eggs go into the incubator, so far not bad. I have some two week old chicks in a brooder and growing like crazy. I love to watch them grow and go through all of the stages. Last year my last hatch was in June, not this year.
Same here. I have some 2 week olds and some 1 week olds, with another batch going into the hatcher this evening. There's nothing like watching them hatch and go through life stages, is there? It never gets old!

I thought this eggs was a quitter (from last years hatch). I mark the eggs that I think are quitters. This one proved me wrong

The only thing I've seen you provoke are arguments. In case you don't know, you have quite a reputation for doing just that. If you chose to use a mature approach to a meaningful discussion, this conversation would have an entirely different tone. When you pounce on someone's statement and say they have no idea what they're talking about, it doesn't set well with people. If you wanted to provide pertinent information, perhaps with a reliable source for reference, your comments might have more relevance. I have conversations with the top RIR breeders in the nation most every day, so excuse me if I only listed one source of nutritional information. Oh, I didn't catch what your experience in chickens is. Like you said, you never know the background of the person you're speaking to. I have enough roosters crowing, so I don't care to listen to people crowing. I need to go congratulate Dennis Myers on his fine bird showing, see how Matt Ulrich is doing in the shows, and chat with many more. It's been interesting chatting with you, but I have better things to do, like talk to people who are a little more humble. People who have tact, and can offer a different set of opinions without coming across as pompous azzes. So consider this as "goodbye". PS: I know you'll respond with some ******** reply, and I don't care. It'll just be there for you to stare at. By the way, this is the "HERITAGE RIR" thread, so those like you who are trying to figure out how to make your hatchery RIR better have no place here. And it's not called lurking... it's trolling. No one likes a troll. I'm done here. Goodbye.
If I provoke arguments, am I responsible for the attitudes of the people who respond to me? I thought this forum was for learning and exchanging ideas. The front page even warns to be sure to hear things that aren't sugar coated. I did take an adult approach to this conversation. I thought you were an adult. Sorry for the assumption. How would you rather I tell you that you were wrong? The internet is full of misinformation as it is. There is no need to add to it. I offered to give pertinent information with relevant references, but you said you did not care. It would not convince you not to follow propaganda. Why bring up that you talk to Rhode Island Red Breeders? They may not understand poultry nutrition either. You did not bring up a source of nutritional information, you stayed propaganda. Big difference. I think my background should be apparent from my posts. Let me know if I need to spell it out. You are the one coming across as pompous. Have I dropped names? You have. So, what do you know about my Rhode Island Reds? What do you know about any birds that I have? Since you are so accomplished, how many class champions did you have this year? Where can I find a list of your publications? Just curious.

How about both of you grow up and stop wasting time on this thread with your childish and futile arguments. How has both of your childish posts done anything to help the breed and better any new members knowledge of the Rhode Island Red.
It hasn't, Wyatt. That's why I said I'm done with it. I think it was a flashback of my days as a moderator for a major computer tech company's help forum that brought that on. I usually gave trolls a what-for just before banning them from the site. I apologize for that. Personally, I'd love to see more new members show up on this thread, but I'm afraid it's lost it's appeal. We have new members joining almost daily on the RIRCA FB page(s), It's a shame this thread has been reduced to it's current level. Bob would be very disappointed.
