The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I had what I thought were Brown Leghorns but they grew out to be Partridge Rocks. I now finally have my Rose Comb Dark Brown Leghorns and Rose Comb RIR from Bob Andersen's line. I feel so privileged. I will keep them pure.

I am trying to buy baby chicks around Greenfield Iowa either no one has them around here or no one wants me to get them. I just want about 12 mixed breed to lay eggs. HELP PLEASE

I'm leaving the chicks in the hatchers tonight and will take them out tomorrow. They will dry out in there. While they are drying they will help keep the humidity up and maybe inspire the others to hatch.

If you just want chicks, how about hatchery chicks. Many feed stores carry chicks right now for Easter. Tractor Supply Co.and Rural King here has chicks. Most chicks will be pullets and you don't need a male unless you want to hatch in the future. Once in awhile the stores may have straight run but mostly pullets.

I am establishing a new farm in New Hampshire. I want to raise a laying flock of Heritage Rhode Island Reds for my family. My intent is to keep them year round and breed them to the old standard. I have only found Dick Horstman as a reputable breeder. Are there any other good lines available. In my research I have heard of the Fogle line but cannot seem to find any for sale. I do not have a way to hatch eggs so I am limited to live birds only. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again to be clear I want to stay AWAYfrom big hatchery"s and production RI Reds.

I'm actually quite surprised how well the hatch is. I have been selling the freshest eggs and I have been putting the older eggs in the incubator. I did have some blanks but surprisingly a lot of the eggs have hatched.

If you are going to be a breeder, you may want to invest eventually in an incubator. You can make one out of a cooler. This coat me around $10. with the lamp fixtures. I used 2 -15 watt bulbs in case one burns out , which has happened. The 15 watt bulbs are plenty and still can get hot enough to cook the eggs. I modified from the original one I had with one light fixture in the bottom and added an AC fan and a wafer thermostat I had. Good luck and have fun...

This was before the modification.

After modification.

Another after modification.

Originally I had a dimmer switch on it. Now everything is on one cord coming out.
