The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hello immyjay,
My Reds came directly from Don Nelson. They will lay at around 6 monthes old. Some start at 5 and a half some a little later.Maybe not the most prolific layers but probably not the worst. They do start at an early age for exhibition RIR.

Thats imposable New York Reds must have crossed cheery eggers into his line. Heritage Reds are not suppose to lay till they are eight to nine months old say the cherry egger people thats why you dont want Heritage chickens as they take to long to lay so the cherry egger people say. Congratulations to the Don Nelson line.

I crossed speckled Sussex into my line said the boys in Ohio when they saw my birds 20 years ago. I never said anything but I never crossed nothing as I only had the reds on my place. Why people make such innuendos in the first place.

New York Reds I dont think you know what a cherry egger is so I guess the line is still 100% Yankee Rhode Island Reds. Great line you folks in the North need some.

Just in case someone doesn't realize my good friend Bob is having some fun let me state for the record I haven't crossed any Cherry Eggers into my Reds. I do know what Cherry Eggers are but I've never owned any. Almost wish I did have a few. Got no eggs yesterday or today. Hens are molting, pullets haven't started laying yet. Well, actually I did get one OEGB egg today-slightly larger than a pigeon egg.
Anyone going to Cobleskill or Syracuse who's interested in Reds I'll have some available. Trios $40 & $60. Lots of extra pullets at $10 or $20 each depending on quality. Found myself in the unusual position this year of having many nice pullets & too few cockerels. Any left after Syracuse will be going to auction to become someones layers.

I think many of us are in the same boat. I have some Cherry Eggers as well and nobody is laying well. My Rhode Island Whites are doing the best in my flocks.

My two oldest Mohawks that were hatched in Feb. started laying at six months.
Where did you get your Mohawks from?

Bill I was kidding. I know you to well. You can take any breed that is in need of help and in a few years have them looking great. Of course with these Reds of yours they did not need any help. If you can get some of New York Reds extra birds this is a steel Don Nelson sold these birds at the Ohio National years ago for $50. each and in a hour they where all gone.

So happy they lay early like this as this is a sign they will lay a good amount during the year. Just remember they are not going to lay 275 eggs in the first year like commerical ones do but they also wil live longer.

Oh, I knew you were kidding Bob but some people are so literal that they don't recognize jokes when they see the. I was talking to those people when I responded.

You know where they came from.......

Well, I'm putting to have the 3rd weekend of October off for the Clanton, AL show. Now I just have to start getting ready. Couple of questions about what to expect, since I have yet to make it to one of these events. I assume that I should be prepared to provide containment for any birds that intend to purchase. Likewise, I assume that I will need to be prepared to provide containment for any birds that I might bring to sell. Although I also realize that show/display cages may be available there. Is there any other advice from the experienced that might be useful to me, beyond the standard info that should be available at the website for the event?
