The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Post some more pictures of Number 3. and take some pictures of them together. My eye is drawn to #3 due to the depth and length of the keel bone, better proportions. #1 and #2 seem to pose with more thigh showing and less depth of keel. The overall #3 color looks more uniform in the picture and maybe wider feather. How do their mothers/hens look? Who is the closest to the line with the "peas in a pod" look? Who feathered out the fastest? Do they all have clean, non striped hackels? Who has the best under-color? Do any of their qualities get you closer to where you want to be when paired to one of your available hens and her comparable qualities?

It would be fun to see the possible match ups that you could make.

From the pictures that you posted I would say this is your best bird.

Hey Doc
Just took a bunch of shots this morning. Gee, you really have my mind going. I can't answer everything but will sure try. First off, I can't show pictures of their mother/mothers. These were hatched from shipped eggs from dinahmoe here on BYC that got her birds from David (I forget his last name, in Maine) that got his birds directly from Don Nelson.
All 3 feathered out about the same except for tails. #1 was the latest at getting the top tail feathers but other then that they are about the same. Not one of them have any striping in the hackles, they are super clean necked. Other then #3 being a more chunky fella and not as tall, there isn't much difference in them. I may just have to really work on picking a couple of girls to put with each one. lol Then see which is producing the better. Gosh, I never thought I would have this much work with these boys.
Going to work on posting the pictures now.
Oh, Chris, thanks for your comment also. This is one hard job.

Just remember they are still only 6.5 months old too and things can still change for quite some time.

I can hear Jim know Oh brother here we go again, but hey its like anything else hows the old saying go "any job worth doing, is a job well done"? I think that's the way it goes huh?

Jeff

Don't suppose anyone going to the Ohio Nationals next month would have some eggs from early(or very late) pairings of LF SC Reds to sell? Interested in adult birds if you are down sizing for the winter also to hatch for next years 4-h projects and start our own flock of Reds.

I can't take all 3 together because #1 bird is in a pen by himself. He doesn't like the other two boys. He is a bully.Pic's with 2 cockerels together will be #2 and 3 boys. #1 is harder to get because he is in his own pen. He will be the first picture I made these pic's smaller so I don't take up so much room. Just click to enlarge. Also, remember these are just young birds and will mature more over the next few months.

#2 & #3 Cockerels w/pullets on some The more chunky one is #3

A couple of the girls that our from this same hatch.

Tha, Tha, That's all folks. lol Hope this helps with the questions you ask Doc.

Immyjay Nice Birds! I was just wondering if this would be considered lacing on this pullet?

LL
I have been studying these girls for a long time and really don't know myself if this is lacing or the necklace that they talk about. I think there is only one that doesn't have any black at all on her neck. The others all have some, some more then others. I didn't worry a whole lot though because my cockerels have no black what so ever on their necks. Just deep mahogany.

That would be my pick as well. Nice looking bird.
This is where I am leaning towards also Bill. With taking all these pictures, #1 bird was my pick but I've leaned more to #2 bird. lol I will have to wait just a little while longer until I get #1 back out of his solitaire confinement. lol He can't strut his stuff as well being penned up. I will know for sure then. Thanks so much for your input also Bill
