The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

No, the colors don't tell and you can't tell the sex until they get a little bigger. The males combs will start showing first. Here is a picture of an experimental breeding I did but the same applies.

Here are some pictures of some of my Red Sex link chicks and my Heritage RIR chicks.

Here are some of the same chicks now. These are all pullets. I sold all of the males.

Hatching chicks this time of year is very interesting. I wonder what color they are going to look like when they get thier adult feathers in in five or chick months. Most Heritage R I Red breeders do not have their breeding pens in place till Dec or Jan.
Back yard chicken folks seem to have theirs going the year around for some reason. Never could figure that one out but do I know. Thanks for the pictures hope more will show up of adult birds. I have had quite a few orders for R I Red bantams started chicks and many orders for the Mohawk large fowl that we have down here.

I hope to get some Mokawks at the Lake City Show in January.

. Look at the RIRs what are the genders, if I'm not mistaken, don't the colors tell?
I guessing that you are talking about the one in the center and the one at the top in the photo. I've hatched or gotten chicks that arrived at 2 or 3 days old and none of them were that different in color. All that I've had were really uniform in color from each hatch. Most would get lighter as they were losing the down but then when the feathers came in they got darker and darker. I was never able to tell by color but it doesn't take long till the males legs are heavier and the combs, wattles start to show up more then the pullets.

Nice Ron
