I can tell and I have hatched a few. You got to wait till they are at least four to six weeks old then the males combs start to get larger and thats how I have done it.
Back yard chicken folks seem to have theirs going the year around for some reason. Never could figure that one out but do I know. Thanks for the pictures hope more will show up of adult birds. I have had quite a few orders for R I Red bantams started chicks and many orders for the Mohawk large fowl that we have down here.
Looks like this will be a very good year to promote Reds.
 
No, the colors don't tell and you can't tell the sex until they get a little bigger. The males combs will start showing first. Here is a picture of an experimental breeding I did but the same applies.
