Can anyone tell me if it is still possible to aquire stock from the old SC RIR mohawk line? I have been told that there are only 3 breeders with true stock and it would be difficult to aquire chicks or eggs from them. I see ads that claim to be connected, however I think people will say anything to make a buck. I have been teaching my son to breed and hatch using hatchery stock but it is time to instill the values of quality and preservation. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
What are Mohawks? I have some Skumchuck Rhode Island Reds. They are named after a river that I had going behind my house as a boy.

Type in Skoomumchuck in Washington State.

Mohawks: There are a few who have this old line. Matt 1616 has many, Greg Chamness in Illinois has my old line. and a few new folks has some but are just geting started. Heck I think I got five hens in one of my A frame pens that are half and half Mowhaks. They sure have dark beak birds. Dark feathered and full of vigor.

Contact Matt 1616 or send me a personel Message. I am sure we can get you some in Iowa.

I think its manly from the dark feathers as its a horn color but on some its almost black. The darker the quill color the darker and more darker almost black or blood red you will see in the quill, the leg spur and what I look for in chicks is the beak. I got five large fowl females that their beaks are almost 100% horn. When they are three to five years old they will still be even in color and dark. Dont know much about other breeds as there is only one breed worth having and that's REDS.
Bob,
As I said there can be a number of reasons for a fowl of any breed having Black Spurs, I just posted the most common reason I have seen and read about. I will say that of the fowl that I did see with Black spurs it was on all colors of fowl including White so I cant say it would have anything to do with Dark Quills.

I agree that the beak color is a key factor to look for in Reds, I have always bred only birds that have good to great horn color beaks and because of this all my birds including chicks have good horn color to there beaks, I would say that I have 97 to 98 percent horn color on my Reds.

I my self try to keep up on a few different breeds but Reds are on the top of my list.

Saw a picture of a pullet that is the best female of a cross of a life time I have been wanting to see for five years. I had a fellow in Illinois that I sold birds to about 15 years ago and a fellow in Florida who I sold birds to about 20 years ago. Matt 1616 got birds from each breeder and made a cross. He hatched about 40 chicks. He showed me a picture last night of a pullet who has a little of both lines and has a great top line. He says there is a male that is coming on board who is going to be a nice one as well. So looks like the first year cross did not go to bad. Know we got to pick breeders from the rest of the Reds and cross onto these to see if we can maintain this look. Vigor was my major concern its been so long since any new blood has been put into this line. The last new blood in the pure Reese line was 1954 a male from Harold Tompkins that Mrs. Donaldson got from him be for he died. The fellow from Florida crossed a bird about 14 years ago that was direct from Mr. Reese but since then noting has been added. The Florida line had problems with fertility or hatch ability. The Illinois line die very well for us and a few others in hatching. Now with the cross anyone who has this old line if they get these birds and cross into their say Illinois line should be in good shape for vigor for many years.

I think the black in the spurs is really horn color. I pay no attention to the color I am just great full to see it on my Red Bantams. Most of the time I dont see it on normal red bantams breed from the 1930s. I got a cockerel that I think has the horn color and the type of his ancestry of 30 years ago in the large fowl family and if I can get him to stamp this on to his future generations of bantams I have reached my goal.

Black or horn its a good thing. I have not had many other chicken breeds other than Rocks or Reds so I have no clue on other breeds and their color of spurs. Heck I cant remember if my old reds from the 1960s that I got from Gary Under woods dad had black spurs. I dont think they did.

Keep the pictures coming. Maybe Matt can send his quick snap shot of his pullet and post it. I am having trouble getting it from email to my computer. If you can take more pictures of your Reds please do so. Also any one have pictures of Red Bantams anymore. We did see some a while back.

Here is a pic I took today, this is a little better pic of the same bird that I posted a pic of a few weeks back....

I'm bringing him to a little small show tomorrow in BR at a State Fair. Guess we will see what happens!

Will do Matt. I'm going with a NH Rooster, a BR Cockerel and this guy just to get my feet wet with this showing chicken stuff, lol!!! It's a Junior's show and I was asked to bring some birds to help support and get it going so I'm also bringing Payton my 3yr old and entering the birds in her name. It should be a good time for us if nothing else.

After I cleaned the birds up, nails, beaks and baths.... I realized that the RIR Cockerel is larger than the NH Rooster that I really like. They both have nice things about them but I keep coming back to this one Cockerel as my favorite bird right now. He is that one I got from you and I like him much more then the other 5 that I'm growing out.
