The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I will be at Inverness and Lake City. We will have a BYC table in the back of the auditorium on the left side of the stage. I will be showing a couple of my Red pullets and a RC RIW cockerel and RC RIW pullet.
Stop by and say Hi...

Will do Matt. I'm going with a NH Rooster, a BR Cockerel and this guy just to get my feet wet with this showing chicken stuff, lol!!! It's a Junior's show and I was asked to bring some birds to help support and get it going so I'm also bringing Payton my 3yr old and entering the birds in her name. It should be a good time for us if nothing else.

After I cleaned the birds up, nails, beaks and baths.... I realized that the RIR Cockerel is larger than the NH Rooster that I really like. They both have nice things about them but I keep coming back to this one Cockerel as my favorite bird right now. He is that one I got from you and I like him much more then the other 5 that I'm growing out.

Here is a pic I took today, this is a little better pic of the same bird that I posted a pic of a few weeks back....

I'm bringing him to a little small show tomorrow in BR at a State Fair. Guess we will see what happens!

Chris
Nice Chris, Have fun and I wish you and your little one the best of luck with all your birds. This one is good looking.

Hey Jim howdy doody to you. LOL I went digging thru some of you pics on here earlier today. Man you got some good stuff going on there and good photography too. My pics always look dreadful and like I pull the trigger right at the exact wrong time LOL

Chris H,
The picture is a little dark but from what I can he's not bad.
The Red in the picture needs to have more tail angel, should have a flater more level back and needs time to fill out his lower chest but other than that he's not bad.

Quote: He will be fine just think of what he will look like next year as a cock bird. Schilling use to say you guys should hire me to paint you a cut for a Red Ckl and a Red Pullet.

Remember he said the picture you look at in the American Standard of Perfection is a 18 month old cock and hen bird.

He is a true Standard Breed Rhode Island Red. This is at least a true Version of what they should look like on the ground. So lurkers who have feed store production reds this is what we preach on this thread for the past two years. Very good job we are proud of your work and your interest in the breed.

Thank ya Jeff,
I go in the lot and just hunker down and wait for quite a while to get the pic's. Not easy to get one that looks like they really look.
I have other birds also Chris09 but like you said, the reds are my main interest. Just seems that since I started fooling with them my interest in chickens just began to peak. I think it is from all the info on this forum that as they grow we start looking for different things that we are wanting or not wanting in them. lol
It just seems to me that I loose quite a few of them between 3 and 6 months. Never had this before with my other birds. I've lost more birds this past year then I have ever lost in my life. Don't know if it is because of them being shipped in or what. This coming year all my hatches will be coming from own birds so I'll see if that makes a difference.
The biggest thing that I can say about getting into the heritage birds is that the hobby has become a job. When I had all the hatchery birds I would go out in the morning/evening and feed/water gather eggs and come back in the house and wash eggs and forget them till the next day. Now it is put the feed/water in the first pen, stand and watch them for quite a while studying to see the good/bad points then move on to the next pen. lol I'm sure you all do the same. Sure is nice to just sit and watch each group to see what we think they are going to turn out like.
Oh well that is all I have to say for now. Will be waiting to hear from Chris H about his first little show. If he wins, he will need a fire extinguisher next to his keyboard his fingers will be going so fast to let us all know. lol
Jim
P.S. Funny how most of us have never and probably never will meet up with each other but I for one can say that I have really enjoyed all the chatting through PM's or post on this forum. This is one of the good things about high tech stuff.

I think its called getting more special attention Jim, a little more than the reg. chickens get LOL I try to make it an effort to go out and chicken sit in the evening time while they are out free ranging and enjoy and look and learn/compare all this stuff I've picked up too since getting into these heritage types too, You can sure hurry up an afternoon doing so that's for sure.

I will see you in Lake City. Although I have nothing to show it will be my first show. I am bringing my 2 grandchildren and we are really excited. Hoping to pick up some of those southern beauties myself. My grandkids want to start showing so I think this will be a super experience for them.
