The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hi, I'm new here to BYC and need assistance finding a breeder for RIR's with the rose comb. We live in northeast Montana where it gets extremely cold. I'm looking for a chicken that will lay thru the winter months (which can be 6 months long). We have Black Australorps that are 1 1/2 years old, they quit laying early winter. Our chicken house has a moderate heat source and does not freeze up, it also has a light on a timer. Thanks

Beautiful hen. The one on top is nice too.

How did she lose her leg?

Hope this helps. What kind of old poultry stuff did you get?
I looked up the old journal that you suggested and downloaded it: Standard-bred Rhode Island Reds by Dwight Edward Hale (ca. 1910), The Rhode Island Red by George Ryley Scott (ca. 1922), and Poultry Husbandry by Morley Jull (1951), and Eggs and Egg Farmers from the Reliable Poultry Journal (ca.?). I really enjoy these old books and journals. A lot of great information.

OH MY GOODNESS Penny, And now there is two. lol Another one just jumped out of the shell.
Just make sure your humidity is fine and leave them alone until time to put them into lock down then forget about them for the next 2 - 3 days and you'll do just fine.
Both these are from the SC eggs but there was one of the RC's rolling around just a minute or so ago. lol
And now there are 6. I know this has to be pleasing you Jim Heinz since these were shipped eggs from you. lol
For anyone who didn't see the post quite a few pages back, mrheinz77 got the Underwood line of Rhode Island Red from Trish Dusil who was a friend of Gary Underwood and got all her birds directly from him. She got out of the RIR's and mrheinz77 took them over. I have one lone pullet that I got from Trish this past spring as a day old chick so I will be happy to have a few to put with her.
Thanks so much Jim for the eggs. Maybe I can help you out in return someday.

No Jeff, I'm not trying to corner the market on these Reds. ha, ha. I really don't have that many of each line. Just a few. Hoping to burst out bators next year though, lol

Oh wow! I can not wait to see all the pics when they are done hatching. Knowing yours are hatching has me even more excited and anxious for mine to hatch. Penny
Penny,
I have two kitchens, one on each side of my house and the one I don't use only for spare fridg and freezer. I have my incubator sitting on the counter top in there and my computer room is right next to it. While sitting here, I can hear them just a chirping away to each other. Sounds so cute. Gosh, it's only been a few months since I quite incubating, you'd think I wouldn't be so happy with these but I guess we never get tired of seeing the new ones come popping out of the eggs.

And now there are 8 3 more with pips that I can see. Not doing to bad so far. Can't tell the % of SC to RC. I won't open the lid till sometime tomorrow unless they all hatch out sooner. Once I open the lid, I can count the shells, The eggs were all marked so I will know how many RC and SC hatch.

LOL I was just thinking boy if he keeps this up he's going to be the for sure goto guy here before too long, like going to a used car dealer they usually got something to get you fixed right up LOL I'm glad you got all these esp in one spot. its a good thing to do a comparison of each different strain in the same conditions/environment.

Good deal Jimmy "go-ahead-on", ol boy.

Ha, ha, ha. Jeff I just love your comments. That's why I have to include a special little note to you so many times. In all seriousness though Jeff, here are my thoughts from last spring. IF I could get a little flock from each of the different lines then I could see which lines seem to lay the earliest, mature quicker, broody the most, hold the deepest color etc. Then if something changes and I were to decide on just a couple of them I would know which was the best for me. I will always keep a few of the mixed birds in my layer pen for eggs but will sure try to keep up with the different lines of RIR as long as I can do it right.
Thanks buddy

Tony Albritine in Idaho may have the Underwood Rose Combs not sure. He might be able to ship you eggs or chicks. Other wise there are so few Rose Comb Breeders to help you that are hard core breeders. Maybe someone who is on this tread would send you some eggs or better ten started chicks that are two weeks old overnight ex pres. They would do well in your climate.

We have plenty of time to work on this. Breeding season for most of us is after Christmas.

Anyone have any suggestions?
