The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I agree NYREDS, I think I would go 100 yards from your house as well.

Actually, I am sooo happy with my little Underwoods, I think I am going to focus on them and work towards getting some of the Nelson line and just focus on those two lines.

But, wait, just because a breed changes doesn't mean it's bad, right? Just because over a hundred years a breed becomes lighter, it can't be the end of the world... It seems to me that some people get too snobby. Production reds are even prettier then heritage... They are worth respect as well.

I'm sorry if you thought my response was snobby. I just answered the question you asked. Did I say they were bad? If you see that in my response, I'd appreciate you show me where. You asked a question and I answered it, just like I do in my classroom.

Well...Here's the thing about all that in a nut shell. The Heritage RIR breed didn't really go away. This thread is devoted to that old pure strain and those people that want to preserve it. Like people that are trying to preserve Heirloom seeds of old heritage vegetables and fruits. Those genes are a valuable resource that once gone are gone forever. That would be a great loss. Wouldn't you agree?
I own a production red roo and love him greatly. He is indeed a beauty. He has a few hens to call his own of equally pretty production mixed breeds. No one here is trying to prevent anyone from breeding or raising those kinds of birds. However...This thread is called "The Heritage RIR site". That's what is being promoted here. Not "The Production Red Site".

Thanks for explaining. It just seems to me that everybody thinks production birds are lame.

(Don't say no, you know it's true...)

And I think it's unfair because they're the birds that help us the most, and give us eggs and meat.

You have a great point. It would be a loss to lose original strains. But I think people should appreciate the commercial type a little more.

I have production reds and don't think they are "lame". Well 1 was but she is no longer part of my egg laying flock. I have a PR who is sweet, and has hatched out some of my guineas for me and is an excellent mother BUT she is a Production Red not a RIR. For me that is the difference. That doesn't mean that they don't serve a purpose or are not good birds for people to raise but they are just not RIRs.
