The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Im thinking I might be willing to sell the SC Cockerel. Im trying to mainly work on RC, and all of my pullets are SC. Here is one of them

Very nice looking young girl there. I have only 1 older girl and she also is SC. She was hatched in April 2012. This is why I'm so pleased to have gotten 1 SC cockerel and hoping he grows up nicely. lol Did you get your birds directly from Gary or someone else. My older girl came from Trish Dusil. She got hers directly from Gary.

The cockerels came from Trisha

Here is one of my Underwood cockerels, needs a little elevation in the tail but I hope that comes with age
When the day comes we have the R I Reds on Poultry or Chicken University this picture needs to go over there for beginners to look at. Now he is a youngster remember he may not even be seven months old now I want you to look at him and pick him apart for little faults. Is he light in color? No Does he have a green tail.? Yes does he have a bushy long tail? No. Does he have level wing car rage? Yes. Is his legs plum or dead center? Yes Does he have a five point comb? No maybe seven big deal that's only a one point total cut. Does he have a sawed of breast or does he have a extended keel for his front. Round and makes the brick shape show up nicely. Does he have good horn color in his beak. Yes almost totally horn colored like many chicks we see. Does he have dark blood red almost black quill color? We dint know as we got to pull four feathers from his saddle are to see. Does he have rich dark under color ? Dint know but most likely he does. His tail angle is it like in the standard of perfection? No but what is the age of the bird in the Standard of Perfection? 18 months old. We will have to see when he molts out and is in this kind of condition for next year as a cock bird.

Does he represent the breed as a Standard Breed Rh ode Island Red? Absolutely and one of the nicest I seen from this line. I had no idea Grays Reds looked like this.

Here is the rub. What does he weigh? Is he one pound over standard weight? Or is he dead on at 7 1/2 pounds? Don't know but if he is not two pounds over standard weight shown in the mid west as good as this bird is he may not win best of breed or first Ckl. They like them big up there those judges just want them to fill up the cage.

Over all this is a great bird and if you want to sell him and someone has Under woods birds by all means buy him. If you cross him onto my old line or Radiometers line you wont get much as the genes will go crazy.

You want Rose Comb Reds How about this idea. Take this male and two of the best typed Rose Comb Underwood females you have. Mate the best two Rose Comb pullets his daughters next year back to him. Then take the two best Rose Comb pullets again and mate back to him. By your third year your Rose Comb females should have his type ad good rose combs as well. Then start a good line breeding program on pure rose comb males and female select type like this male and then work on getting away from hollow rose combs from the single comb cross. Your females should look great as they don't show this fault as bad as a male in five to seven years you could have the best typed Rose Comb Reds in the USA.

Very nice picture I don't think you realize what a good bird you have here. When he is mature maybe at age 14 months in this condition he should look fantastic. You did a bang up job of raising him and he is in pink condition. I think the thing I like the most about this male is he is so Symmetrical. Lot of people dont know what this means in a old style bird. Bob

Okay BREEDERS.
I have different lines of the RIR. Here is a problem that I've seen in them. NO, I did not produce any of them yet. Most of my pullets are reaching the age where they should start laying and since they are, I've really been looking at them very close. I know that I've read on here some time back that we shouldn't worry about color, go for type, type, type. Now, here is a problem that I see in almost every line that I have except one.
The pullets tails have the red lacing around the edges of the black feathers in the tails. I'm new at trying to get these birds to the SOP and all my birds either came from eggs or chicks that I've bought on line. Most came from well known folks on this forum. There is no way that I would sell eggs from these birds to anyone for incubation "unless they were expecting to really work on the lines." The thing is this, if there are no pullets at all in any of these lines without the lacing, do I just throw them in a laying pen for egg production and forget about trying to get good ones or do I mate these birds and try getting a few good from what I have.
I will say this and hope no one gets to aggravated with me. Of all the different lines, the only pullets that I have at this time are the 3 that came from NYREDS. They do not have one black feather in the tail with lacing on therm. I already got Bill's answer to this question and agree with him 100%. Just wanting to see what others have to say.
Jim
