The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

1) are my hens production or heritage? 2) where can I get heritage RIs? 3) are they good brooders?

Thanks for the pictures. I have a Friend who has a flock of these and I see them every time I drive by his house. I often wanted to take pictures of them to show people who ask me what the difference is between the Standard Breed ones and production.

So know those that tread state to the viewers and readers who is sharing eggs or chicks on this site so if anyone who wants a fresh start can contact you. Many of you are the only source they will have as most of the top breeders are sold out this year because of the demand or don't sell eggs or chicks anyway.

Look forward to you who will then when I get emails or personnel messages I can send them to you. Help others and share and improve the breed.

I had a few go broody in the late spring early summer when it got real hot not often. They also was breed to lay lots of eggs so this did not happen very often.

I just sent an email to one of the breeders on Roberts site, the phone number for Greg Chamness is not in service. I guess I will send snail mail to the other two. Does anyone have this original line on here, I want the original Mohawk from Roberts birds, I love the story of them so I want that line. Thanks to you all for any help you can give me.

Before I found my Mohawk line of RIR I got some very nice birds from Dick. I like the Mohawks a little better so am sticking with them. Dick is not prolific in terms of responding to every query, but I found him prompt when he ultimately had the birds/eggs to ship. He knows his birds.

Hoping for a nice hatch of the Mohawks the beginning of next week.

We have had mixed weather so struggled a bit with eggs getting chilled so viability has been less than awesome. I only have the opportunity to gather eggs in the evening and have a broody hen that gets on a few eggs in the morning, I take tehm away from her when I get home. I theorized that she gets them started and when I put them in the incubator a week later they have died. Anyone know how long an egg can begin to incubate, get cold and then be successful in the incubator?

I havent heard from him in two weeks, of course he did reply that he would send ASAP! I know he cannot predict when it will be and he told me he does not like to send eggs that are over 3days old. I emailed him again just to check in today since I haven't in around 2weeks now, My silkie eggs are on their way today and was hoping to set these eggs together. I'm impatient by nature lol These chickens sure know how to push that! lol Anyway, hope to hear from him today one way or the other. I'm wondering if he will even be able to this week if he is already decided to stop sales for now. I won't be upset in the least though, it is out of his hands, I will just buy elsewhere possibly until he can, maybe just pick up a few production reds from TSC in a few weeks to put with my Silkies.

Mine look a lot like these reds so mine are production reds for sure.

If they look like that they are. I have been raising them for 1 1/2 years now. They are great layers if that is what you want. None have ever gone broody to this date. I even lay golf balls in the nest to see if I can get one to go broody. Use to have a leghorn. She would be the one to go broody all the time. LOL.

Starting some nice Heritage Reds from Ron in a few weeks!!!

Quote: You often wonder if these are used in commerical chicken houses for brown eggs or just to sell to folks who are back yard chickens. They are breed to lay lots and lots of eggs. In a commercial chicken house its about profit per sq foot. These females are in cages all there life until the stop laying and then do they keep them for one more year or replace them with new young fresh pullets. I often think that is why the males are so mean is the em phis is placed on egg production than anything else. They are however great for egg use and for your home that is why there are maybe 50,000 of these chickens all over the USA. The get all the credit if you Go ogle or go to Bing for being Rhode Island Reds.

Most people have no idea what a real Rhode Island Red looks like that is why its nice to see pictures of them now and then on this tread to remind us how to com pair.
