Ohh I'm putting a light on the little ones, the ones that still need a third or more of their feathers. It is the 7 week ones, I was unsure of. I don't have enough lights to go around, but would get one if it was needed. I just did not plan well for this spring's weather.

Not if they are fully feathered.

Hey Ron, good to see you here.

Got a question for you. Have you notice the cockerels at 7 weeks still need feathering on the backs, while the pullets feather in quite good bit earlier? I'm sure on the sexes, so it isn't a question about that, but about feathering speed difference between males and females.

I noticed that from my chicks. I was correct all along. I had 2 roos and 8 hens. Both roos had less feathers on there back and short tails. But I notice this on a few of my different breeds.

I've been sexing chicks for decades and have always used a host of tell-tale signs. Head shape, tail feathers, feathering in rate, etc. After you've seen a few thousand chicks over the years, you're eye gets trained to see the details. A few of them always make you wait to be sure.

I think if a visitor from the 1700's walked past our laundry room, they'd wonder why we needed two square boxes. I seriously doubt they'd know one was a washer and one was a dryer. They'd just look like two square boxes sitting there.

That's kind of the analogy I use when dealing with folks trying to see cockerels and pullets.

I sure am enjoying my 11 week old RIR chicks from Ron. This is my first time with the red chicks. They have such a wonderful personality. Yesterday I was just standing in there outside pen which is pretty big, they came running up to me and stopped, cocking there head to the side and looking up at me. They seemed to say well are we going to get a treat or not. That's my kind of chicken. I have not taken a count yet but it looks like a lot more Roos then pullets. There is two Roos that I have my eye on already but we will see.

Well, this is the last week to have my breeding pens going. It has been a good season, and I have some good looking birds growing out.
It is very gratifying to have helped 15+ people get started with RIR. Some went with chicks some with hatching eggs.
Shipped eggs average 50% or better with only one failed hatch(That persons second hatch was successful)

I hope everyone enjoys their birds and look forward to seeing your progress.

I love mine!!! I wish you could see the one roo. He is HUGE!!! As big as my Brahmas now. The other one small but pretty. But now I have a fox I seen twice coming out of the woods. So far he couldn't get in so the area must be good for now. But TRAP time!!!!

There is a fellow who called me two days ago who lives in Illinois. He does not ship but will have some nice birds.

I don't know anyone in Mich.

In regards to the cold weather. I just spent one hour out side from 8:30 am to 9:30 am and my tea shirt is soaked with sweat. Yesterday I got in my car after fishing and the temp in the parking lot was 104 degrees. After I got on the high way it got to 92 at 1 pm.

I about dehydrated myself to no return.

Does anyone have any chicks that are seven to two weeks old they can ship to beginners? Or eggs?

There are a few late bloomers who want some. Most of the birds are done for the year expect maybe up north. bob

I guess global warming is just in the South and the North its back to normal.
