misting stations, what a wonderful idea. A couple of weeks a go it was in the 90's here and I went out with a hose on mist and misted my birds. They were not really fond of it but maybe later this summer as it gets hotter they will appreciate my hose.

I used to mist by hand with a hose, but the heat wave has been brutal so far. I have about 400+ birds counting growout pens with 37 coops/runs. It had to be automated. And this has an automatic timer on it, so comes on late morning and runs until around 6pm.

The birds have been much happier and well worth the cost of the equipment and time to set up.

I use sprinklers. The birds have shade tables to get under. They go out under the sprinklers cool off then under the shade tables. I have around 400 birds also,

Here some of the shade tables.

It was a sad moment when I read this mourning that Hollywood was killed. He reminded me of some of my brick shaped males I had years ago. You will have to learn from this that the varmits, dogs out there are always wanting to kill your bird. During the day its Hawks and night its the owls.

If Hollywood would have grown up I envision him to look like this guy. Can you see the classic brick shape, oblong body on this young male. His legs are plum or dead center well balanced like Walt was talking about on the H Large Fowl tread.

This is a wonderful example what you want to look for in your young birds. What blood line did this male come from. There are several strains of Reds out there I would like to know if you got him as a chicks who the parents where. Hopefully you will have more. Protect this male and his brothers and hopefully this fall we will see him in full bloom.

Thanks for the wonderful pictures. So sorry about your loss. bob

LOL. We have good ole fashion woods here... The hills under the trees in the woods have a better breeze than anywhere else on the property so that's where everyone heads on the heat of the day... Cattle, sheep, chickens and lgd's

Hollywood was killed last night. Something got into my chick coop even though I have electric around the pen and killed 14 of my chicks including Hollywood. I have an owl also that has killed 4 of the older chicks in another coop and pen the past few nights. I will be on guard tonight. Was going to put some traps out but it has been raining off and on all day. The minute I go out to do something it starts to rain again.

So sorry. :-( Wish we could help! -AG

Hollywood was from some birds I got from Matt. I have a couple of other chicks from the same hatch that are good looking. It was a total shock when I went out to their coop and found so many dead birds. I'm thinking possum. I found a place where the fence was against the electric wire so it probably shorted it out so that whatever went under the fence didn't get zapped.

My reds are from Don Nelson lines. They came from a friend of mine Don Ostrander in Rocky Point North Carolina. He has Adrian Radamacher lines as well as Don Nelson lines. These birds were hatched Feb 6th 2013. We hatched 18 and culled to 7. Two cockerels and five pullets. I plan on trying to show this Red in the fall. Hopefully he will turn out to be nice.

That's why I put the poop door on most every night. Unless I fall asleep, LOL. It's a pain but too many things can happen at night.

I had a table like that I built. But they started roosting under it at night. So I took it out.

Same here. All woods. They have plenty of shade during the day.
