The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I sure would like to see some pictures of some RIR hens. Seems like a person only gets to see roosters.

Thank you,
Scott

I have some chicks about 5 weeks old. Do the males and females feather differently in terms of color. Some chicks have some small dark barring, I think primarily on the wings, while others don't have it and are in general a little lighter in color. The chicks with the barring were also the ones that had very distinctive dark stripes/marks down the back when they were younger. In fact, I was not expecting those types of markings when I got the chicks and actually thought they were the Kraienkoeppe breed that I had also ordered.

Thanks,

mark

Mark, where did you get your Rhode Island Reds? What line are they? Do you have any photos of the issue of barring?

I had Production Reds with the big dark stripping down there back that I hatched this year. I know there was a big discussion on here about that. After seeing that on my chicks, I don't think there's much to that to be honest. One way or another.

These pictures aren't very good, but you can get the idea of how dark and distinctive the stripping/marking was when they were young. I thought the yellow chicks were the RIR, but they weren't. And some of the RIR chicks were red instead of yellow but without markings.

Interesting... almost look like Rhodebars or some sex linked chicks... or is that just me?

I've hatched a few different lines and I've not seen that distinct, chipmunk look on our chicks. However, other may have. I am also not sure where Sandhill secured their line and if this is a feature of the birds they have.

Don Nelson line chicks

Ron Fogle chicks (some Barred Rocks too)

Our Kittle line chick

More of our Kittle line chicks Some of which display a bit of that look, but nowhere near as distinct.
