This is Tanker at about 32 weeks old. He is an Underwood line RC hatched from shipped eggs from Jim Heinz

Tanker and one of his hens from the same hatch. She is an Underwood line SC.

They free-range and are a bit faded but not nearly as much as I thought they would be. They are all managing our summer heat without a problem so far.

Very nice Penny,
This is what I woke up to this morning. I had a few of the RC eggs from my RC's from Jim so thought I would just see if the fertility is there. These eggs weren't real fresh when I set them. I really didn't know if I wanted to try with them since these girls have only been laying since May. Well at least I know now that the young boys are doing their job. These babies are from both RC parents. I think I may get 2 more from these eggs. I do have a few more in my Brinsea but they are promised already. Should be able to get set up pretty quick with these birds. I hatched out chicks 11/10/12 and already have chicks from these birds. That is pretty good maturity I think. lol

That is a very good sign for maturity, fertility, and hatch-ability all are good which is a sign of high vigor and this comes from good breeding and selection practices.

in other words very good stock.

Lucky you Jim there are alot of folk out there that don't have this, and have to work hard with what they have to make gains in these areas too.

This little pair was bred by Jimmy from his NYREDS/DinahMoe - Nelson birds. I need to take a more recent set of photos.
They are simply the calmest, nicest chicks imaginable.
Oh my gosh Fred, I am so happy for you that you got a pair after all the trouble we have went through to get you some chicks. Thanks for posting and you sure did make my day knowing that you did at least get a pair. USPS can be real killers with shipped eggs.

Lots of the HRIR lines aren't even laying at 7 months and here I have young out of mine already. lol Trying to pat myself on the back isn't real easy. ha,ha
No, I don't really take the credit. All I did was hatch eggs and feed the parents until they started laying then set the eggs. My job comes later this fall when I get really serious about picking my breeders to mate up. lol This was more or less a test run. Now at least I know that the fertility is there and I see the high vigor in the males all the time. lol Thanks for the wonderful post

I "vaguely" remember in one of my long conversations with Gary that he told him that 26 weeks was his laying goal...
There was so much info crammed into that conversation... I wish I had written some things down...
I copied this off one of my emails from Gary: Depends on care of course, but usually about 23 weeks of age they should start to lay.
I know exactly what you mean about so much information being crammed in. He is like a talking encyclopedia. lol I do mean that in a wonderful way also.
I keep every email from him in a folder. lol
