The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Anyone have any experience with their RIR getting a bit aggressive around the time to start laying?

Years ago I had some hatchery Reds that were very aggressive towards the other birds but not with people. There was one I thought she was going to kill some of the pullets that were in the same pen. She would get on them and peck them bloody. I would take her out of the pen and put her in a cage for a few days and then put her back in with the flock and she would go after the others again and I would take her out again. She would guard the pop door and not let others into the coop to eat so I put another feeder under cover in their run and cut a second pop door in the coop. She would still attack the others but that did help. One day I saw her beating up on a pullet. She was so intense she didn't know I was there. I had a hose in my hand and gave her a good squirt. She was so startled by the water that she jumped off the pullet and ran into the coop. She didn't come out for quite awhile. I did that several times. She finally gave up. It did finally break her but it wasn't easy.

Really not intended in any way to be cruel or snarky, but I have the opposite problem with our old Kittle line birds, They don't want to get out from under foot. I've never had to chase one down either. Just bend over and pick one up. Never saw anything quite this friendly. Sometimes it is a pain. You about trip over them.

So what's the term for the opposite of human aggressive? LOL

Mine do the same thing. I think they are trying to trip me.

Very nice Penny,
This is what I woke up to this morning. I had a few of the RC eggs from my RC's from Jim so thought I would just see if the fertility is there. These eggs weren't real fresh when I set them. I really didn't know if I wanted to try with them since these girls have only been laying since May. Well at least I know now that the young boys are doing their job. These babies are from both RC parents. I think I may get 2 more from these eggs. I do have a few more in my Brinsea but they are promised already. Should be able to get set up pretty quick with these birds. I hatched out chicks 11/10/12 and already have chicks from these birds. That is pretty good maturity I think. lol

Jim I am waiting on my RC pullet to grow up so I can breed her with Tanker. I had no intentions of breeding him with a single comb BUT I just found 1 of my Ryans sitting on 3 Underwood eggs in the goat tote. Only found them because the setting hen took on 1 of my SC cockerels through the chainlink fence. Nothing bolder then a hen wanting to be a mom, lol. Not sure on fertility but if they are Henroo's eggs doubtful on fertility, she still bucks Tanker off.

My cat does this a lot. Not so much my chickens.

Likely a posting error. Wrong thread. LOL
I kind of figured they were referring to my pink looking chicks. ha,ha,ha Flash through the plastic top on the incubator can sure change color of the chicks in these. lol They probably figured pick chicks from the colored eggs. lol Anyway, I have them out of the bator now and they really aren't pink.
