The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I'm at a loss for words, it's like this vast wealth of knowledge is gone but then again he has this big bunch of followers who will keep his legacy alive and hopefully we will be as good at it as he was, a big challenge for us all. May his family find peace in the coming days and weeks knowing that when he passed he was doing what he loved-------talking chickens. My regret will be not getting to meet him in the future.

I refer to Bob's website for a lot of information. I don't know if it will continue but it is a wealth of info.

first time I placed with a RIR :)
Thank you :)

I don't understand why you would want to propagate the dwarf genes? Do you consider them superior or desirable in some way over the LF genes?

I have all LF, Australorp, Orpington, RedSex Link, RIR and could not grasp some of the fancy small breeders logic. For some, seems they considered them pets or pretty "for show" but all of this seems to divert around the main issues of egg and meat production that pays for the feed and range. In that context dwarf/bantams would score very low, wouldn't they?

If you are raising chickens for meat then obviously bantams aren't the way to go. As for egg production, some bantams, Reds among them, tend to lay pretty well & a good sized egg. All that said, you might consider the possibility that not everyone shares your value system & that they may find raising bantams rewarding in a whole different way.

Well said

I have just returned from a week out of town and only this evening learned of the passing of Bob Blosl. I am sad for the poultry world, and especially for the Rhode Island Red and Mottled Java, the latter of which he only this year accepted care of a very old line, shared with a very few others. If there is any way I can assist with the care of his birds or lines, while my resources are very limited, I am happy to do whatever I can. How heartbreaking. Words cannot express what I feel right now.

ETA: Honored to help would be more accurate

Very well said Bill. You know I have always respected your knowledgeable comments. I read the post earlier today but just didn't feel like jumping in at the time. Like you, I thought well, if a person was raising a chicken strictly for meat, that would be right. But like you said, some do lay a very nice size egg. The other thing is this, Look how many folks raise quail for eating. Not much meat on some of them. The other thing is that a lot of folks don't have the room for large fowl or the funds to feed a bunch of LF whereas the same amount of bantams wouldn't eat near as much or take up as much room. Some folks just like to show and they have a wonderful time raising the little guys. As far as I'm concerned, if a person wants to get into breeding or raising chickens for whatever reason, it is their time and money and their business what they want to go with not mine. Gosh, I used to have German Shepherd Dogs. Now I have Chihuahua's. lol I could put a lot of pens inside my large pens that now house LF if I later decided to go with bantams. I could still enjoy having chickens and not have near the expense that I have now.
Let's all enjoy what we have, compliment folks on their good birds, help them if they are having a problem with them, congratulate them if they win and try to help them to win the next time. lol Life is to short. This can be an expensive hobby so lets all enjoy it the best that we can.

I would like for everyone to know that I spoke with Bob's wife Zora for a few minutes today to check on her, see how she's doing and let her know about this memorial page for Bob. I told her about the numerous messages and calls I have received about people wanting to send her their prayers and positive thoughts. She is very grateful for everyone's kind words about Bob. It would be best to send cards to the address in Silverhill, Alabama if you would like to instead of calling. 14390 So Blvd

Their son is there and we still don't know anything about arrangements.
