How come I can learn so fast about hatchery vs breeder birds but others don't get it? I do have an issue with the Hatchery posted but really its not about that. Its about the misleading way most hatcheries sell. See wht happens when I try to explain how hatcheries work?

Same reason people eat fast food and processed foods despite them being unhealthy. Hatcheries are easier, no waiting lists, cheaper, have a bigger online presence, marketing, etc etc.

I will however add after reading that specific thread that is NYREDS says they have good LF Game there and I was looking for that particular breed (not the others, but that one) I would place an order so fast it'd make your head spin. LOL

The LF Game may have been very nice. That does not take away from someone that lives next to Cackle and has been there to see their operation.

What was posted was to go to the breeders that sell their eggs to Cackle and buy them directly. Duane Urch sells hatching egg through a Strombergs hatchery. I bet they hatch his eggs too. If I buy the eggs Directly from Urch, they are much cheaper than what Stormbergs sells them for.

I understand that. But what it means is that the person who the hatchery buys those eggs from is a good breeder. Any of the egg birds they have have been bred for eggs. Like their RIR's. And that is FINE! But they have been bred so far past what they are supposed to be it is amazing. Fine as well I guess. Cept for their advertising. BUT don't sit there and tell me the hatchery keeps their own flocks lol. Its a HATCHERY...ok. Think I feel better now lol

Ideal has breeder houses and buys eggs to from others as a lot of hatcheries do this. I think you have two issues combined here and don't know too much about either and don't get and at me either LOL

Im not gonna get mad. lol. I want to learn as well. I just know about this one hatchery that was asked about. They pay (used to not sure if they still do) you...or rather give you chicks of the breed you want to keep and get you started. Then you are on your own. They will buy all the eggs you want to sell them. They asked....I told....got beaten for it lol.

Here are a couple of pictures of some of my RC pullets at 4-5 moths old. I can hardly wait for them to grow up. Like usual they just never pose for a good picture while the camera is on them.

While trying to get some pictures taken this pullet just followed me all over. I set the can down right in front of me as she looked up and continued to eat...Dad...it is much easier to eat out of your can than to go scratch for it.

I have had several different lines of Reds both RC and SC. These are Underwood RC Reds via Tony Albritton. My favorite SC Reds come from Warren Carlow who is a neighbor of Don Nelson.

I am going to try and get a picture or two of my RC Rhode Island Whites. Been trying to find someone who has excellent Whites.

Love my Underwood RC RIR... that said, the hatchery birds do have their place.
I am a statistics freak. I sell a LOT of eating eggs.
A pair of quality production hens who are under 4 yrs of age support not only themselves but one trio of HRIR who provide the eggs and meat for our family. That is on feed costs alone... Not including any HRIR eggs, chicks, or breeding pairs I might sell.
I raise both and slaughter all my production/hatchery birds the year they turn 4.
My poultry, like all the other livestock I have, must be self supporting or they don't stay. Because farming is my business and my life, no dead weight is allowed. The hatchery birds provide the means for the heritage birds to stay. IF I showed a lot and advertised a lot could the heritage birds support themselves that way? I don't know. But what I am currently doing works for me.
I believe they each have their place. The hatchery roos are nasty and I hate dealing with them, but I keep one at any given year to perpetuate the hatchery birds. Given the choice, I would keep only my HRIR. I absolutely love them. But the hatchery birds serve a purpose.
