The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Not the greatest of pics but wanted to show my roo. I got him a few months ago from a lady who had all RIR's for eggs and didn't want the roosters, so I thought i would take him for hawk watch over my 8 girls. I don't know if he's production or anything, but he has gotten very large and is the most friendliest roo. That's his name- Lil Roo, cuz my hens were bigger than him when i got him. I just love him, he's just starting to crow also, sounds so cute.

He is a very nice looking Production RIR. He will be a great Flock Rooster!

If you want to switch over To Breeder RIRs, get on a list here since it can take some time to get them. My boys are Massive now in comparison.

Check my Avatar--they were 5 months old then. They are over 7 months old now.

One of my roosters from Ron's line is mating with my ducks. Should I be concerned? My ducks are 20 week old Khaki's so I'm thinking they will lay soon but they have not started laying yet. I know I am low on hens for my RIR roos to mate with, but really he is going for the ducks. He is number 2 in the pecking order, could this be his attempt at making it to the top?

The other way is dangerous--Ducks have an "appendage" that chickens do not have and that can hurt the Hen.

Don't worry about it. The eggs will not be fertile either.

when I had duck some of the cockerels would do the same. Had to separate the ducks.

Well, the oldest Nelson pullet is now 22-23 weeks. The tamest pullet EVER!!! by the way. Geeeesh, how tender she is. Good to know what to expect as I learn this strain. Got a cockerel and two more pullets comin' up. They're doin' fine, Jim, thought you'd like to know.
That absolutely tickles me to death Fred as hard of a time that we were having to get you just a little flock to have to work with next year. I've gotten one absolutely gorgeous young cockerel. He has really nice length and width to his back. Should be a good one for my next year babies. Hopefully anyway.

Well, Jim, this is a new line for me, so there's not going to a lot of pickin' and choosin' or thinkin' involved. One male, three females and go, go go. hahahaha. I't kind of a no brainer.

It exemplify the old axiom, "Start with what you have" and that's what I have. Next year, we can do the old pick and choose, but this year? Just try to keep everybody healthy and safe and make a bunch of chicks.

That's all we can do when first starting with just a few. You'll do just fine. I have a lot of faith in you. lol

"Thanks for the memories Bob."

One month ago today we lost our dear friend and mentor to many. I don't think there has been a day go by this past month that I haven't thought of him. Just ;yesterday I was out looking at the big red boy that he remarked about calling him High Stepper. Don't mean to bring up any sorrowful feelings but just wanted you all to know how much he is surely missed at my home. My my my how quickly things can change.
Sorry if I made any of you feel bad with this post. It is just that I've never had anything hit me like this has. I think it was just the terrible shock. I don't think I will ever forget that phone call from sgribble.
Jim
It's a beautiful day in Pa. today. Sun shining, hens singing and roo's crowing. Had a good breakfast, looking forward to a good lunch. What more could a fella want. lol
