The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I miss Bob so much. Heritage Large Fowl continues with many new people posting. But there is a dearth of what Bob was so passionate about....matching newcomers to the HLF world with top strains which needed preserving. We need to get back on track with that. Lots of teaching going on. But not as much matching. I think of questions I want to ask and then... Bob isn't there to answer. Oh here comes the tears again. I miss him so much
Best,
Karen

He is a very nice looking Production RIR. He will be a great Flock Rooster!

If you want to switch over To Breeder RIRs, get on a list here since it can take some time to get them. My boys are Massive now in comparison.

Check my Avatar--they were 5 months old then. They are over 7 months old now.

I would really like to start with some breeder RIR's next year. Would you or someone from this thread be able to help me out? Thanks.

Mine came from @FOGELLY

There are others on here too. What State do you live in?

Poultry shows is another good source too.

This post is in reference to the SC Reds from Dick Horstman. First I want to say that I am in no way trying to cause any disagreements, friction, arguments etc. I have no problems with Dick whatsoever. I also want to say that I had RC's from Dick that were of nice color etc but just not what I was wanting. I talked to Dick on the phone and said that I was maybe going to get some of the SC from him and he told me that the SC's were the Kittle line reds. There is a page on my site on the Kittle line birds if any of you would like read some info on them. They are super layers but I gave up on them because I just didn't want to put the time into them trying to get the hens tails right. They just seemed to have pinched tails and to much lacing in them. Again, I'm not knocking anyones birds, just not what I wanted. My really good friend Donnie Baker has had these birds for 4 or 5 years and is doing pretty well with them. His information is on my site also if any of you would want to get in touch with him. I still have probably 3 of the Kittle girls that I raised a few years ago but they are in my layer flock. Going by the pictures on Dick's site, it appears that he had done a pretty good job with them but it seems that the tails on the Cock birds are awful high.
These are very friendly birds and do lay exceptionally well.

Just my input on these birds.
Jim

Thank you Jim!

They are not the highest for showing for sure. I do know that out her in CA, with some selective breeding, A Cock Bird won(I am not sure what) at a little poultry show. The Horstman Reds would be good for someone starting to show or someone that wanted nice real Reds to replace layers.

Maybe a transition Line?

I am not breeding them--It is the Fogel Reds for Me!

Back a few year ago when I decided to go with the real reds and started my research, my (now) friend Donnie was the first person that I found through another web site that had the Australian Light Sussex (that I had back then) and I had Donnie send me a couple dozen of the Kittle line eggs. I hatched them and they were okay but the more research I did, they just weren't the quality of birds that I was wanting. They sure did lay well though and were still a lot better quality bird then the ones that I had in my layer pen from the hatcheries. Now with all this said, if you are not wanting to show and if eggs are your main goal, this line would be the perfect bird for your in my opinion. They are a decent size hen and the boys that I had did not get aggressive at all. Also in my opinion if someone was wanting to experiment on crossing a line it would be fun to take some of these top of the line males and put over the Kittle line hens. You may get something that would make you proud. I'm not one for crossing the lines but this may really improve a decent line to make it a far better looking bird. ??????????? Just some thoughts. Keep them separate and if it doesn't work then you can just quit and still have some good laying reds. lol

I have Underwood RC reds and love them. Great layers, good size, extremely friendly. Since you are up in Michigan you might check with Duane Urch in MN. I know he has both RC and SC Reds not sure what line they are but they seem to be fairly good. So much depends on what you want in your birds so look around, get some pictures if possible of their stock and go from there.
