The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I am in search of an "underwood" SC RIR BANTAM cockerel or roo. Any where from peep (born no later than end of February) to a year old! We have beautiful underwood birds but we lost our two Roos this winter to a coyote. Now desperately trying to find something my son can show for 4h this year! Show is in August. And then breed his hens too! Please help us!

Still waiting on the Nelson pullet to lay her first egg. I have caught her IN a nest box once or twice but that is it. She spent a lot of time in an alternate spot I fixed with a piece of OSB leaning against the wall. But am wondering if she was just hiding from advances of the rooster who was heavily hitting the other 3 hens in the coop. He even managed to hold on to neck feathers while the crossed rock 'pulled' him before he got on her! Normally he runs from the cross as does everything else she decides to give short burst of a dominate clarifying chase at.

I am just drooling waiting for her as SHE (the Nelson pullet) is the choice for breeding with the rooster for hatching to build up a proper breeding selection flock. This Nelson on Nelson is my ultimate plan. She is showing the signs that makes me anticipation. The old slogan "Anticipation is making me wait" has a firm grip here! She talks to me every time I come in unless she is in That semi secluded behind the osb. Am expecting that is where she will lay her first egg as she is looks at the nest the other hens use but seems to always get kicked out of it.

This morning though is so cold out there. Even the thermometer hanging below the monitor opening (it IS in direct line of the cold entering the open front before going up to exit the monitor) was below 10 degrees! Inside the coop has been running 10-15 higher than outside the coop. So I know OUTSIDE temps has to be under 0 degrees again!

I cannot contain myself! April-ish I'm getting hatching eggs of rosecombs from the Underwood line. :) Now to find a proper white rock breeder and get my doms.

You will love them.

Ah yes we get high on anticipation but that waiting and being somewhat patient is what is the true sign of someone who will/can succeed in breeding for preservation of a line.
Many people quit or aren't diligent because they can not find the patience and dedication to feel what they are doing is worth it. They just can't wait out the natural progress of things.

Being a true no chemical gardener as well I pray for a good harvest but will not give it up to use chemicals for that fast, yield improvement. I like the natural grown food and do my livestock the same way. Just like knowing my plants and their soil, weather, water requirements one must learn of the breed and wait for it. Quality is ALWAYS better.

We are the same way, we use high quality feed for the animals and no chemicals or pesticides in our gardens. We do put netting up to protect the blueberry bushes from the wild birds. We have a frame around our blueberry patch of which we have around 50 bushes. When the berries start getting ripe the birds will wipe them out in no time. We do make compost with the manure which goes in our gardens. We don't plant right away but till it in good and let it set for a bit..

Going to put in 30 eggs today.

My first hatch with my Reds. I through 8 under a broody HD last week. I candled them and only 3 had a chick in them. But I put them under that girl way to early.. The rooster and hens were only together for a few days. So hopefully these will be much better.
