Its horrible what some people will do for a great chicken. But people look at me like I'm nuts when I tell them my best RIR roo was stolen from our yard.
A friend of mine has someone stealing eggs while she is at work, didn't have any eggs when she got home and noticed the latch wasn't hooked when she went to her chicken house. But they have set up game cams to see if they can see who it is.

That stinks. Having to lock and unlock everything makes it less fun.
I'm considering keeping a few spare roosters this year. Last year I had 2 backups so when the best was taken, I still was able to keep breeding. The 2nd guy was so close to being the best I don't think it will set back my breeding at all.
This makes you mad for them, they lived in town found them a little place in the country and the first thing they did was to get some chickens just a few and they are having a blast with them. Her husband built her one of those fancy chicken coops that you see advertised that cost a lot of money he is handy with a hammer and nails. But hopefully they'll find out who it is.

Have I mentioned I LOVE my Italian Maremma? ;-) Predation protection isn't limited to the 4 legged and/or flying varieties.

All she has is a nice golden retriever. She says that someone must be noticing when she and her husband are both gone at the same time most of the time they ride to work together but one day he has to stay longer than she does so she drives her car too. I told her someone needs to stay home and let both cars disappear and wait on whomever it is.

  • Irishhenman;
  • I don't know the UK standard on Red's but I can go by the APA Standard and like before it is real hard to judge a bird by a photo.
  • You have a nice Red, he looks to have good neck, head and eyes nice beak coloring and good yellow legs. The black in his tail looks good though he looks to have some red in the black at the base of the tail (need to watch that), he also looks to have a nice wide and flat back.
  • He could use a little longer back, fuller tail (looks like someone cut the lower 3/4's of the tail short) and a little less tail angle (more tail may fix this). He needs more depth of color and to carry the wings more parallel to the ground, I would also like to see some red in his shanks.
  • On a side note, keep a eye on those feathers they look rough kind of like he me have other bird pecking at them. If your birds are feather pecking check for mites and lice if there clean then check that there getting plenty of animal proteins in there diet, chickens are omnivores and if they don't get enough animal proteins they will start pecking/ eating feathers..
thanks, I have had a look at his tail and there is no red in the black feathers so it must just be the pictures. They should be getting loads of animal protein out on the grass but I will get some meal worms for them to supplement with. I will try and work on the tail. So far some of his sons have nicer flatter tails. Our standard doesn't require such a deep chocolate brown colour as the American one. Capsule I ask what do you mean by more red in his shanks?
