I agree. That's why they say us novices would do well to find a good breeder to be a mentor, who would spend some time looking at our birds with us. Unfortunately, I haven't located any in my neck of the woods that are into the old reds. So I lurk here a lot and read and study the Standard.
If you have the time, reading the old posts on this thread from Bob Blosl is a great way to learn.

Bob was a great guy. He passed away several months ago. He named one of my chicks Hollywood that was destined to be a good show bird but sadly the chick was killed by a predator. I'm working hard at preserving the Reese/Mohawk line. Last month one of my cockerels and one of my pullets both got [COLOR=000066]Champion American Class. I have worked hard for the past few years with my line.[/COLOR] It takes a lot of work but if you pick out the best and breed them back you will have some very fine birds. I am not mixing the line with any other as I want them to remain pure Reese/Mohawk.

This is the best of my 2014 cockerels at 8 months. All three pics are of the same boy. He wasn't the largest of the bunch, but he was the most correct (at least to my untrained eyes.) He is from Reese/Urch lines. I didn't cross them. I bought chicks from a guy who did the cross. I kept him and three pullets from the group of chicks. The pullets are more evenly colored and darker than he is.

This bird appears to light in surface color. Not dark enough. I guess it could be the lighting in the picture but knowing that he has Urch blood would lead me to believe that his color is off.

Lol. Im a man. And i just bought the reds about 4 weeks ago and the barred rocks last week. I may be mistaken but the birds may be out of yours. I wanna say they are out of a guys flock named matt from Alabama. But dont quote me on that

If so matt, id love to talk to you about them. The guy i got them from was in a hurry to get somewhere when i picked the birds up and i didnt really get a chance to talk to him as much as i would have liked.
