The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hello everyone, I have a question. My son wants some bantams.( after seeing neighbors) I showed him a picture of bantam reds . He loved those because they look like our reds we got from Sgribble.( he has some great looking birds I might add) So that being said does anyone/ or anyone know where we can get some really good bantam reds?? A trio or maybe a quad? Or some hatching eggs, chicks? We would surprise him with an early Christmas gift. Thanks you guys are awesome!

Bantams are big with 4-H kids--Maybe check with the local club's poultry leader.

Question..i have a very nice looking trio of Mohawk reds. Wanting to breed them. Cockerel looks good, shape, color, legs etc. but has 6 points on the comb. Should he be used to breed?

5 points is described in the Standard as the ideal. Few birds approach the ideal. Breeding is working toward the ideal over many generations. 6 points is pretty common. The number of comb points is a very small cut in judging. I'd not be concerned. One must start somewhere and you can only breed the birds in front of you.

I agree. A lot of birds have more than 5 points. I would also be more concerned by the looks, shape, color and legs as well. My bird that just got champion at a recent show had 6 points but his comb did look good. He had cut it in between the middle two points in his cage just prior to the show and it bled a bit.The next day when I discovered it, the blood had dried and I tried to wipe it off but it had started scabbing over so I decided to leave it alone. Apparently it didn't affect him with the judges. My birds are the Reese/Mohawk line.
