The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Matt,
I'm not happy that you weren't at the show but I'm sure if you had been your bird would have won. I better count my lucky stars.

My new birds. Horstman's line. 6 yrs they bought RC and SC RIR from him at a show. These are descendents with no crosses. 3 mos old. https://www.backyardchickens.com/content/type/61/id/6625273/width/200/height/400[/IMG

A production RIR outside the pen looking in. I'll be looking into his line more and trying to focus on his work. Comments?

The info on this site is priceless and searchable. Thank you to the moderators for maintaining such a high level of pertinent history and feedback.

I found a post on Craigslist for some day old RIR Chicks for sale near where I live. I convinced my husband to get them, and I love them, but I am beginning to wonder if they are really RIRs. The man we got them from showed us what was supposed to be their parents and they looked like the heritage dark Rhode Island Red Chickens that I was after. Now that they are 3 weeks they are beginning to get a little white on the tips of their feathers. True Rhode Island Reds are not supposed to have white on them correct?...

side view of my pullet on top then two cockerals. last is standards inside the pen with a production RIR outside. they are 3 mos old. SC and RC breeding stock purchased about 6 years ago, like I said, Horstman line- no cross breeding. thought i was getting two pullets and one cock but it doesn't look like that to me. comments? advise? I started reading this forum before getting them and realize that a few generations from the original breeder stock can result in some massive changes. I'm going to research his original line and work to his focus. thanks for any feedback, I can take it.

danawhitely90 - If you click on the right hand of the page where it says "view all" from recent posts to the page you'll get a scroll of hundreds of pics from the page since started. I looked and it seems your chicks are similar to others posted there- although I didn't read the posts so I am unsure if they are standard or deviate from keeper stock. If you click on the individual pic the comments from the post will come up and you can see what the experts are saying about them. as you can see, I'm just hatched and just scratching the surface of this forum. Unbelievable the amount of information available and resources. good luck with your chicks.

These are my Heritage Reese/Mohawk RIR chicks form my last springs hatch. Some of the pictures are shortly after they hatched and some as they were a little older.

Hi all,
I haven't posted on here for quite a while but for some of you newer folks, if you go to my web site you will see lots of pictures of chicks and older RIR's and they are all the pure RIR's and you will see what the color etc is supposed to be. Lots of information on there also that may help you all out.

Not being smart, just trying to help.

Thanks Jimmy! Your birds are amazing! Even as babies there is no doubt about what they are!!

I now know what my babies should have looked like. Oh well... I guess I have don't have heritage birds but they should still be good for the small backyard
flock I have. It is hard to know what they will turn out to be, but already I see that the beaks are the wrong color and shape, and they should have been darker all over. Live and Learn!!!

Thanks for the info!
