At first when I didn't see her on the nest I just thought she was off to relieve herself so I let everything alone. Later I went back into the coop and still no hen. I checked all the chickens and no one was clucking so at first I thought that maybe something got her. I brought the eggs up and put them in the bator then went back at dusk and the RIR's were all accounted for so she had to just decide to stop. First time this has ever happened to me this late into setting.
I will post this weekend to what happens. As you said, fingers and toes crossed. lol

My project chicks at 3 days old. Loving their color. My broody hen that was due to hatch decided that she didn't want to be a momma. She was on the nest hard setting for 17 days then decided she didn't want that anymore. I'm only hoping that I got the eggs into the bator soon enough. Every egg has chick in it. I will know in just a few days whether I got them in time or not. Gee, this is sort of upsetting.
these little xhucjs have beautiful color i hate to hear ta broodt cut her sitting time short matbe tou got ya egga ib the incubator in time hope so im wishing you luck keep us posted .I know it can be a upsetting situation.

That gut dropping feeling of thinking one has been eaten by a predator is awful isn't it.. I know it's better for a drop in temps over an increase, so hopefully the worst is that they are a lil late ♡♡

Oh my yes, it was a real gut dropping experience. I've had this happen with a young hen before but only after a couple or three days and I'd just toss the eggs but never had it happen after this long. My biggest concern is that the eggs maybe got to chilled. Our weather here has only been in the 50's for the past few days. I have no way of knowing really how long she was off of them. Just have to hope and pray.We can only do our best in these situations and leave the rest to a higher power. All things are possible, I just have to believe. Oh well, we'll see.
Sort of like Sally's power going off.

Lol, very true..
Is it bad that your guys thread is so much better than the threads of the breeds I actually own? Lol..

We had a storm about a week ago and our power went off..I immediately started brainstorming ways to keep my eggs alive..I had my van started and the heater cranked..my mom works at a hospital about an hour away and I know their power never goes out with all the back up generators to back up generators..I was going to set them up in her office..mind you one of these incus is just a hatcher and had chicks a day from hatching. .literally as I was setting them in a tote to cover with towels to put them in the van our power flicked back on..
So the OB floor was spared the peeping of newly hatched chicks and the vision of me pacing like a woman in labor..lol..

Fingers crossed and a prayer said too. I have some turkey eggs that are supposed to be hatching late today. I'm doing my best not to watch for now.

The OB floor would have been a perfect setting for new little ones. As for pacing while in labor, its overrated, swimming is much better.

Sally,
As soon as this happened, I thought of your power going off. Gee, wouldn't life be boring if we didn't have these little set backs? lol Thanks

Yippie after I moved those that cooled off in the incubator quit on working when I stopped the turner and upped the water for hatching...... to the adjusted test one 14 hatched within 24 hours of first pip, 3 pipped quitters, and the other 6 were infertile!!! One of the quitters was double yolked so didn't want it anyway - now to figure which hen is laying them.

So my adjustments seem to have done the trick. The last of possible fertile since the cock died are going in now...:fl This is my last for the year.... have 29 chicks so far now.

Wish me luck here. If good then I will have some to make selections from.

Fred is going to get with me with a couple of my lost Cocks Nephew. The real breeding can now begin in 2016!
