The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

First where are you located? You need to find a small breeder like the ones on this thread. None of the hatcheries have the type of reds such as the ones in this thread.

One hatchery MyPetChicken, has RIR listed in its heritage breeds. When I called them, the rep had to look it up and replied it was on the list of heritage breeds. I got a buyer beware kind of feeling off of that, and the picture looked like a production bird.

I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction in starting my flock off right.

That is the basic smoke and mirrors of selling chickens, I'm afriad. Yes the BREED is heritage, (whatever that means), but the birds they are selling (acutally drop shipping) are not. They'll be blah, run of the mill, hatchery stock.

The keeping and breeding of truebred stock is simply beyond the pale, beyond the mass production capability of the hatchery model. Breeding purebred, standard bred birds require skill, experience and really cannot be done by those who simply cannot commit to the work it takes to do selective breeding.

Hatcheries breed in massive pens of 100 males in with 800 females. This is NOT selective breeding, not in the way required to keep birds up to the Standard of Perfection level. Hope that helps. Depending on your area, we can probably point you in the right direction to some real Reds.

Hello all,

I'm getting into back yard chickens, coop is almost built. I had been thinking about what breed to choose from for a small flock of 5-8. After reading into this thread RIR are my choice hands down.

The problem I am having is locating a breeder that deals with heritage RIR. I would prefer having birds of heritage over egg production. All I have found in my search for breeders are references to hatcheries.

Just wondering why you always put this show up every time I post?

I do usually go to that show even though it's a around a 7 hour drive and it's one of the largest shows in the southeast and there are usually a lot of nice sale birds there too. I was really just responding too and may have mixed up the posts. I know my memory isn't as good anymore. It sucks getting old. My heart doesn't feel it but my mind and body do. Actually today I was out doing maintenance around the coops and I had to stop and think what family do I have in that coop so I thought maybe I better write it on the coops to make sure I keep them straight. I laugh at myself. How can I be so forgetful? Our coops are numbered. My husband numbered them. (.05, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) I don't know why he didn't just start with number 1 etc., but it has been that way for a long time and if we changed now I think we would be very confused. We are in our 70's. We don't have dementia but do forget things. Sorry about the mix-up.
