The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Can someone please post pics of HRIR chicks? I used to know much more than I do. I just picked up 5 Mahogany RI Reds and one has wing feathers that look different than the rest.

These are my Reese/Mohawk line chicks.

chicks a little older starting to get their feathers in.

These are all pullets in this coop with some Red Sex-Links I also hatched out.

Here the chicks are in a grow-out coop with the Red Sex-Links and Rhode Island White chicks.

Have a slightly bad feeling 4 are red sex links... do they have the mahogany on their beaks? The wings on 4 are lighter and have lots of marks. The wings of the one are dark red with no marks.

Do you have any pictures of them you can post?

To me they look more like Production Reds. When they feather out a bit more you should be able to tell better. The chicks are precious. Here are some pictures of my Red Sex-Link chicks. The white chicks are the male RSL chicks, the buff colored are the female RSL chicks. There are some RIR chicks there too. I also had some Production Reds so some of these chicks might be PR chicks. I hope I helped. Good luck and have fun...

These are chicks just after they hatched. Some are still wet. They are RSL and project chicks from a project I was working on.

RIW, RIR and RSL chicks.

There are a couple of youngsters here that are a cross of a Buff Orpington female and RIR male. They are the lighter red chicks. I had a BO female that was getting picked on by my other BO's so I put her in with my RIR's and her feathers grew back in and since I couldn't tell which eggs were hers I just put them in my incubator with the all of the other eggs.

I was told they were Heritage RIR. I am so tired of being screwed over by people. I know Chris Herzog so maybe I can get some from him in spring if he has them.

I would probably know him if I saw him. The name is familiar. I went through the same thing, a fellow sold me some eggs that were supposed to be heritage Reds but after I hatched out the chicks, they were not, they turned out to be Production Reds. I went to a poultry show and bought some nice birds from a breeder that got his start with the Reese birds. At the time I didn't know he had gotten his birds from the fellow that started this thread. Since I met another breeder who usually wins show champion at the shows and arranged to get some birds from him at a show. I have been very happy with them. Is Chris Herzog a judge?

Rhode Island Reds are a heritage breed. Hatcheries sell them as Heritage fowl all the time, so no one is lying if they advertise poor quality reds as Heritage! If you want quality birds look for other keywords... such as standard bred, exhibition bloodline, or an actual bloodline listed. Also, do some research on the breeder.

Another term people often become entrapped by is show quality. A bird does not have to be a quality animal to win a 4 -H or local fair/show, but I see those people posting their (awful stock if you know the standard of perfection) for sale as show quality fowl.

I don't know. He is a leader in Gulf Coast Poultry Fanciers Association.

Production Reds are certainly not the same as Heritage.
