What would be an ideal breeding pen for Bantam RIR's? I have a 6 x 6 currently, which would hold 18 Bantams, but I am considering dividing it in half so each half is 6 x 3. Would that be okay? Or would the whole 6 x 6 be the better deal for RIR'S?

If you have a 6x6 with 18 bantams thats a little crouded. I have 4x4 and have a trio in them or a pair.

All you need is say one or two breeding pens. The best male with one or two females. Then the same with the other breeding pen. Then hatch ten or fiveteen chicks per top female. Rasie them up toe punch the chicks to thier family and do it all over again next year..

I have today 8 hens and three pullets and only need about four or five females for next year. To many bird just eat more feed.

I have reduced my males down from ten to six. Some I will use on thier grand daughters next year.

Hope this helps. bob

How do you get rid of the roosters? Cull or sell?

Quote: Thats a nice way of saying it. If I have a Friend in North Louisiana who raises some of the finest white rock bantams in the USA every year in the summer as he culls his birds he knocks them in the head and puts them out for the garbage man to come along. He will have hatched maybe 50 chicks and keeps eight. His culls in the late part of the fall are worth $100 each. They could beat most strains of White Rock Bantams in the country. That is just how he does it. He is one who does not sell birds that may be shown against him and if he does sell birds to some one its a long distance away where he will not show them.

Wow. That's pretty hardcore. He could make some money off the chicks he doesn't want.

When I was a kid we would have a pack of kids and we promised to be friends help each other and be true and never lie to each other. We would then take a jack knife and cut our wrists and the blood would then go from his to mine. We where blood brothers like the Indians we saw do this on TV.

This is kind of the same thing. Do your very best what ever breed or strain you take on to preserve for the future generations and also share your strain with others who have the same blood lines. If we do this for many years with the simple idea to help the future generations then these rare breeds will be around for many many years even when we are gone.

Thanks for your loyalty. We are doing this for our breed and the great men and women who pass them on to us to take care of.

We didn't know much about blood born pathogens back then. It's a wonder any of us lived through childhood, Bob. We did so many things they now assure us will kill you.

I though about that and why is it a few of the super dupper Master Breeders do not share their birds with others.

One reason they don't want to get beat by their own bird. I did in a show last weekend I sold a ckl to a guy then he came in with another high priced trio and beat me for best of breed. The second show I got best of breed and Res SCCL on the white rock pullet.

Next and one I did not think of until I heard some judges talk about this. They dont want people showing their line that has reversed in QUALITY. That is they dont want anyone saying Master Breeder Mr. Brown birds sure dont look very good I thought he had better than that. So maybe that is another reason. A lot of breeders dont do it as they want to raise them up and make sure they dont sell anything with a lot of faults on them. That is how you go to a big show say at Columbus and he sells ten or twenty for $50 each in two hours.

Most people who sell eggs or chicks on the whole are not the top two or three breeders in the USA. They are people who may have good strains or some who got good strains and like to sell chicks to people. A lot of us buying these birds and show them never get on champion row because they cant get them into a Finnish very well. Now in the past two years we have a couple of guys who have done very well as good as the master breeder who sold them their chicks. That's what you like to see.

So that's my take why guys kill $50 birds and send them to the dump every week or so.

On more than one occasion I've been beaten by a bird I sold. Never bothered me a bit. I always figured there's one person who won't be telling people I sold him a bad bird.
