My chicks are 9 weeks old and have pinched tails. Does this go away when they get older? I have sent some pictures to Sand Hill Preservation Center in regards to chipmunk stripping on the chicks and the barring on the wing feathers. These are the darker birds and are turning out to be the pullets. SandHill has said that there might be problems with this years batch of RIR's, but have yet to elaborate since I sent the pictures. No need to post more pic's now, I will wait a few more months, but I was curious about the tails.

Thanks,

Mark

You are looking at chick feathers wait till they get their adult feathers in the go through different stages of feathering when this young. You can tell when they are about five months old.

Don't worry about the pinch tails either. You are not going to show these are you?f
Enjoy their growth learn how they develop and latter in the fall we can see what they look like and you can move on trom there.

Maturing question... I have 20 HRIR (Underwoods) who are really beginning to sort themselves out and mature now at different rates - they are now 11 weeks old. I have not yet banded any of them (or done any other kind of identification). Is it toy advantage to go ahead and begin to identify the runt (who might catch up but I don't want to perpetuate slowly maturing birds), or the largest and fastest maturing? What identifying features (other than type/color) do you all begin to look for between 3 and say 6 months? I'm wanting to make sure I track and keep proper records and don't have any regrets about not tracking something... Don't want to get down the road and wish I knew who that "biggest 10 week old" was, or "that 11 week old who appeared to have a wider back", etc.
Thanks for any advice.

Darnit!!! I was lookin for a photo of me when I was 3 with a HRIR in 1986...cant find it anywere!!

I've got a pip!

It won't let me attach any pics though.

I thought for sure these poor egg-babies had died because during incubation, I had the power go out several times, the temp jumped up to 104* on a regular basis and once up to 106*. I have one external pip and one internal pip, and hopefully the remaining four are doing well too!

Now to keep myself occupied for the day so I am not hovering over the viewing window all day...

They aren't HRIR, they're barnyard crosses (an experiment), but I am a lurker here and thought I'd share!
