The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Back in this thread, a couple years ago, the OP, Bob Blosl talked a lot about just meeting up with people. Meet them at a poultry show nearest you, that kind of thing. Bob also used to talk about getting in your car and driving to go get the birds you really, truly have your heart set on. Of course, with gas sometimes pegging $4 a gallon, such long trips don't make a lot of sense, but if life was taking you past someone anyhow? Sure. Why not. A two tank of gas round trip? Might as well splurge for the shipping.

But if you're buying more mature birds, the cost is really going to get high on shipping. Meeting up with someone begins to make more sense if you're talking about a half dozen 8 month old birds.

Hey! This hobby costs money, that's for darn sure.

LOL yeah it's about as profitable as race cars.LOL I find it takes deep pockets and satisfaction only comes in your gains and rewards. Non refundable fun tickets is what you purchase in this game in other words.

Well, as more of us discuss shipping chicks this coming season, as opposed to eggs, it would be wise to prepare for what to expect monetarily.  Laying in some shipping boxes is itself an expense.  Predicting what the postage will cost is difficult, but similar shipments made recently by some of the folks here would provide some guidance anyhow.

Just guessing, but $180-$200 for a box of 10 chicks, all told, might seem stiff to some folks.  This is going to take some educating of the buyers.

I have shipped a bunch of chicks the last 2-3 years and it is usually about $60.00-$70.00 for 15-20 2 week old chicks. The box comes out to about $15.00 if you buy in bulk.

I feel badly for you guys that live in these states with all these regulations. In Alabama if you can stumble up to the counter at the post office and you got some money they will ship whatever you bring in there. I have never had them ask me for anything other than the money for shipping cost.

Thanks Matt. Very helpful. So, 60-70 for the postage, 15 for the box. $10 for each chick, if you were charging $10 a chick, 10 chicks sent, the total would be $190. Not trying to throw any wet blankets on anything, and I'll leave the subject alone for now, but real numbers are important and I thank you for the data Matt.

That's a steal for someone who is serious. My best purchase poultry wise this year was one adult pair, 2 birds, the total for them plus box, plus shipping across the country was $250 or $275 and worth every red cent. No worrying about if any of the chicks are goin to turn out good, or if any eggs will hatch, just boom, instant ready to go. Even got then early enough to hatch a few chicks of my own out here.

WOW, I'm all bug eyed. I've been searching to see if I could find that original picture. I quit, lol I'm not 100% sure but I do remember seeing that shot before and I'm almost certain that it is a Nelson cock bird. If I run across it I'll let you know who posted it originally. I know I have it somewhere.
Bob and Jim, That is a Nelson Cock bird that was owned by Dinahmoe

I thought that was it but was afraid to say for sure until I found the picture. She sent me pictures of her birds. She and I used to PM back and forth quite often but haven't written now since past April. Gloria is one really good person.

Oh, thanks

Matt, which box do you use?
I have been using a Horizion Single Nest Box, and shipping 10 maximum, fearing they would be overcrowd and get to hot.
Aside from the cost for the buyer shipping two week old chicks is far easier than shipping eggs.
However shipping day olds is not good for me. It is challenging to get 25 chicks to hatch within a few hours of each other, then getting them to the post office and shipped in the window of time necessary.

Here is mine once they got a little size on them. I posted way back when they were about 3 weeks or so in the 300's almost into 400 pages I think. Anyway was going to post a few pix of them now. They are only 4 months old now. This is one of my cockerels. They are losing their baby feathers now.

In with some of the Aussies free ranging in the next two pix.

As you can see I have a lot of cockerels. I also have one black aussie and sex link mix here that is a cockerel that I am going to let go.

I love the way this ones feathers curl around his neck. He's out in the sunshine on this one.

I
think I have picked out the 2 cockerels I am going to keep but still wondering IF I know what I am doing enough to be picking out them. Really don't know what to look for. I posted pix on one of the threads on BYC and asked which ones to keep. I had them numbered and some folks helped me pic out two of them.
This next pic is of them in the run area on the stump. I'm thinking this is Goliath on the stump with the pullet.
