The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I just bought some hatching eggs and hopefully this isn't premature but I thought it would be nice to have a copy of the APA Standard of Perfection. I don't really need the hard cover version but I was wondering if the Rhode Island has seen much if any variation in it's standard over the years. Do I need the newest version for reference or can I buy an older copy?

Nice Matt! Wish I was closer to you. Looks like perfection. What breeder did your original stock come from?

:) Wish I was already as experienced with breeding as you. Finances here are low and I definitely get judged for having heritage birds when I am always short every month making bill obligations. Can't afford trip to get full grown quality stock so am going to do my best with building flock using my own breeding learning experiences from pullets I got from Freds Hens.

I know it isn't the best to cross lines but what I have is a kittle pullet, Nelson cockerel and pullett. Will have to hatch every egg the RIR give me this year. Then two white rocks for eating and selling. This years least perfect will be added to the "laying" hens.

As far as breeding I don't know what I am doing so this will be a learning experience... before the heavy duty breeding of the best. I do need tutoring on how to do the best 'record' keeping. ;)

Going to tell my kids to notify Fred if something happens to me. Only fair since he gave me my firsts that I "will" to him any I still have at that point that he wants. My kids are too stuck on "city life". Can't even get them to visit.

This bird was Champ Large Fowl at Newnan, Ga.

Matt

So I can see Matt why he took Champ

My mother is very similar. She won't step foot in our house if we are brooding chicks. I know she has not been in our back yard since we got our first chickens either. My dad is a bit better about it, but every time he sees a chicken, he makes this face like a rotten egg was just cracked on his head. He showed up unannounced a few nights back. Just so happened we were cleaning out the duckling brooder. We had put all of the smelly bedding out the front door to be moved in the morning daylight. He made a great face that night.

Nah it isn't the poultry. They think I should be the one to travel all the time. Dr suggests I not travel especially in the winter weather. Their view is it is easier for ONE person to travel than a family with kids. I love the 'sorta' quiet life here. He he one reason for having Chickens... dears you will have to come here... I have a 'farm' now. ;) You know it is just like them having a job they can't leave. This is MY form of a job. Just don't make what they do. Another reason to stay home with my chickens, cats and fish tanks.

My Grand daughter got to come for a week last summer and absolutely loved getting the eggs. Also fed them but then wasn't sure she liked how they "won't leave me alone, they follow me all over the yard". But then every 15 minutes she wanted to go check for eggs. Wait until she finds out I will be having a bunch now and hatching them too! And she doesn't eat a lot of eggs. It'll be a while before I tell her they come from the same exit opening as 'chicken fertilizer'. LOL

An older copy is fine if you're not interested in newly added breeds/varieties. The Red description hasn't changed. You can usually find older copies on EBAY or at ABE.com

We don't get tired of pictures right?

Piccolo has changed quite a bit in seven weeks. From this at four days old

to this at seven weeks old

Gotta love that gawky feathering stage. This one is a hatch mate.
