The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I know this is a RIR thread and I do have some very nice Underwood RC Reds but I also have some, I think are pretty nice Rhode Island Whites. So p,lease indulge me a few pictures of some of them from my late February hatch. As usual they posed so well for me...NOT!!!

Pullet

Cockerel

Pullet-What I am seeing is the one on the left is that she has such a great open tail. Most of them I have seen are very tight and pinched.

Thanks
Rob

I ended up with 11 eggs hatching between my SC and RC pens. While some of them are darker then others the last one to hatch from my RC pen is so dark it is almost black. I know dark chicks are a good thing but is being that dark a good thing?

Here is a not so good cell phone pic of some of the chicks. You can see the dark one at the top right.

Well it is very rough but this will be the quarantine/safety/grow up quarters for my 4 chicks right within the larger coop. They will be able to grow a bit and there is an upper section when they can make it to the roost up there! Still needs tweaking but it'll work at this point to keep the older ones out of and off of the area. Cleaned out old shavings today and will be sanitizing tomorrow and letting it dry well before I put down the new bedding for them.

You should probably check the definition of quarantine. Keeping them in the same space behind wire accomplishes nothing. Many pathogens are air bourne & wire won't stop the exchange of particulate matter.

ok quarantine wasn't the right word as far as the chicks are concerned. Separation pen for safety and grow up is a more adequate terminology. They were born just before Easter and I don't get them until the 14th or so. They should be old enough to go outside by then.

The quarantine thought was more for use AFTER chicks are grown and integrated for adult birds that might need to be protected while any injury heals or a young rooster protected from an older one if problems occur. I can not bring them in the house because of my respiratory health and cats who would be good killers.

Nice separation cages you have assembled in your coop and nothing like repurposing materials good job ????

Thankyou. I will perfect it later. But don't be too hard on NYRed she had a good point and I understood it fully. She was being blunt but helpful in case I didn't understand. You never know what peoples level of understanding those dynamic are and where they just aren't educated. I welcome both types of response as if I didn't get it I would want education so my flock didn't suffer illness and loss.

I have a killer barn cat. not once has he gone after a full grown LF chicken. I only have LF so I can't say if he would hunt the tiny banty chickens. My cat will kill rabbits and wild birds. I don't trust him with live chicks by any means. But I can't see him trying to get one of my RIR roosters.
