The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Just thought I'd post a pic of Sarafina
We purchased her as a Heritage RIR
She's a month old tomorrow
She doesn't look like a Heritage. Be careful as some people will call their birds Heritage but they really aren't. These are all Heritage. They are Reese/Mohawk line.

A little older.

Some of my Nelson line babies started hatching Tuesday have 9 in all right now,
I'm happy for you Monnie. Got the surprise of my life this week. One of my Nelson girls from last year went broody. I wasn't going to bother with any more chicks this year but I figured it she wanted to try and raise a few I''d let her. She only has 8 eggs under her but that is okay. This is my first Nelson to go broody. lol
Best of luck with your babies.
Jim

Well, I hope I have something to look forward too. Maybe I'll get one to be broody too.

Cool Monnie.
Jim I hope next year I may have a broody. Much rather raise that way as I think the chicks are more hardy and robust when mom raises them.

Does anyone have chicks or hatching eggs for sale or know where I can get them. I really want the heritage reds. I've had the other red varieties and from what I have read here these are what I am looking for.

Welcome to BYC and welcome to the true bred Rhode Island Red thread. Very few true breeders will have either eggs or wee chicks this time of year. Those unfamiliar with breeding are not always aware that breeders to not breed birds year around. Most breeding is done in late winter and early spring, depending on the climate where the breeder is located. With ever increasing hours of daylight, the females come out of winter and begin to lay well. A chick hatched in March has the opportunity to be in top juvenile form for the fall exhibition season. Summers are hot and the older birds are recovering from the breeding pens and the newly hatched young stock is growing out.

Late fall and early winter is the time birds moult, rest and females take a break from egg laying. So you can see the annual cycle of a breeder aligns closely with the natural cycle of the birds themselves. Breeding pens are generally assembled in February and broke up by late April or early May.

This time of year, some breeders will sell you juvenile birds. In fall, many breeders will sell 7 month old birds and often bring such stock to exhibitions they may be attending.

Not knowing where you reside makes it a bit difficult to point you in the right direction. Hope we can help you find what you're looking for.
