I appreciate all the good advice. I am in NW Missouri and found a few breeders on the Livestock Conservency webpage before I found this thread.
Most of the folks that I have found going for the best foragers, just seem to run a barnyard mix.
If there's anyone you can suggest as breeders, please let me now. I have a 24 place incubator so I could buy hatching eggs if it is to far to drive.
 
Eggs are alright, but you'll find most good breeders do not like the whole egg business. They'd must rather put 5 or 6 chicks, at say 5 weeks, in a shipping box and there you go.

Another preferred way to get a start is to secure a quad of juveniles later in summer, early in fall, when the breeders thin their 2015 crop down to size.

One last way is make arrangements with a breeder to attend a show he/she is going to attend and bring home a whole passel of birds that the breeder is ready to part with.

Many breeders will put 100-150 chicks on the ground, but only end up wintering over 10 birds the following winter, birds they really think will help their program. The rest are made available.

Lots of ways to skin this cat. You'll be using that incubator soon enough, for sure. Eggs from your own birds. Shipping hatching eggs can be frustrating to both the seller and the hatcher and this is why most of the top breeders want nothing to do with the practice. Take no offense. It's just something they have learned to shy away from, for lots and lots of good reason.
 
cmom - after the newnan show I would like to buy 4 or 5 of the cockerels you have left..... I hate hinging everything on the one lone one that we have. I cringe to think if something happens to him....... would this be ok with you?
