I wish you the best of luck with your search. We've been asking around for about a year and for some reason, True HRIR seem to be just out of reach. Our daughter finally had to settle for a production red. It's a pretty bird, but that youngin' isn't a happy camper(yet).

I guess I am, though. Most of her friends are all into older boys or worse. There is some of that, but I'm glad she's found another hobby to obsess over.

Anyways, good luck with it all. Maybe you'll end up with some mighty fine hatching eggs you'll be willing to part with.

My son is 8 yrs old and he is now addicted to chickens his favorite breeds are RIR ( this is his saying the real dark red ones dad you no the real ones). Lol. I showed him the heratige breed vs the production reds and he loves the heratige. His other favorite breeds are white leghorns and the have to have the bright yellow legs and barred rocks and they also have to be the heratige which have to have zebra striping. he does have the productions of the RIR and the Barred rocks but I would love to get him some eggs or a trio of the Heritage RIR and the Barred rocks if any one has eggs or chicks or started please let me know. Oh yeah he did help me work and save his money from selling eggs this summer and he was able to get his white leghorns he wanted so that one of the list. Lol

I'll say again that while there are a few breeders of the true bred Reds here, 90% of the Reds breeders are not. Private message some of us and we'll do what we can to hook you up with someone nearer to you. It won't be right next door and you may even need to go for day trip somewhere to pick up some birds. You may need to joing the Rhode Island Red club and gain access to the member's only RIR FaceBook page. You may need to go to a show and meet the breeder there. As others have stated, there are a good number a pretty good Reds hatched out this year which will be sent to the freezer, given the cirucmstances beyond our control with AI and the shows all over states in the north central portion of the nation.

These Reds don't grow on trees, as grandma used to say. They aren't availabe at an auction, feed store or hatchery near you. Same goes for 95% of the breeds in the American Standard of Perfection. They're bred, rased, kept and shown by hobbyists and dedicated Reds people and by them alone.

There's a whole brave world of purebred, Standard bred poultry that simply isn't on most folks radar. If you're not part of that world, you'd likely have no idea how to connect or even that such a world exists. This is why there are a few Standard bred (aka "heritage") poultry threads in this section of BYC. This section barely scratches the surface.

Always glad to help someone get started and make the necessary introductions and connections. Warning, however. Many, many great breeders and hobbyists of fancy poultry have zero web presence, don't chat on forums, don't even do e-mail, hard as it is for the younger folks to even grasp. The prefer eyeball to eyeball conversations, or will talk at great length on the phone. It's just the way they are. They prefer directi human interaction and don't trust, aren't familiar with or won't do virtual anything. Some do not even own a computer. LOL

So with that said, carry on everyone. I've got to go handle some outstanding, true bred, honest to goodness, Rhode Island Reds and make some choices myself.

I do agree with Fred. I do not sell my birds until the show season starts here in the south US. People ask me all of the time about buying birds from me. I tell them I'm not selling. Sometimes I want to say "don't you know what I have None For Sale means?" I grow them out and keep the very best. Our show season here starts in the latter part of October. I do take birds I have sorted out for sale to sell at the shows. I did get my 2nd chance start from a BYC member Matt1616 that I had met at a show and had arranged to get a quad from him at another show. I had purchased some (Heritage RIR's) birds from another breeder a few years earlier but wasn't satisfied with them. They had great color but I wasn't satisfied with their form. I eventually sold them to people who weren't interested in showing but thought they were pretty birds. Breeding quality birds takes several years.

That is adorable. Sounds like you've got a little champ on your hands.
