The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the thread and relatively new to raising Rhode Island Reds. I grew up in a chicken rearing family, and my father's prized birds where his Rhode Islands. So, I guess you could call them a family tradition. :) But, I didn't start raising Rhode Island Reds until last spring.
Here are some birds that I hatched this year. I haven't picked out the breeders yet, even though the family is starting to get antsy about eating culls. hehehe
I still consider myself green when it comes to selecting Rhode Island Reds for breeding, so any advice would be appreciated!

I'm thinking about eating this boy. His wings seem to point downwards at the ends?
I do see the downward slope on the wing tip but you atill have beautiful birds.

Very nice birds. Just curious. Are the birds from any particular line? I have a Rose Comb Rhode Island Red male who holds his wings low and at a show last season the RC RIR at the show also held his wings low. My Single Combs do hold their wings higher.

Thanks for the complements everyone! These are all Mohawks. Cmom, is interesting that your Single combs hold their wings higher. That cockerel is the only one I have noticed this trait, but I really should look around for it on the other boys.

Just stunning, each and every one!!!! Glossy, shapely, beautiful birds!!!!

These birds are so beautiful. The difference from hatchery watered down ones is so glaring. Do they really have better dispositions too?

I seem to think so. I have kept both dark mahogany, heritage Rhode Island Reds as well as hatchery ones. The hatchery ones are generally nasty and bite. So far the heritage Rhode Island Reds have not been like that at all. I think it really depends on where you get them from. I also think that the heritage variety lays better, not to mention way more fun to show!

I agree, My pure RIR's are all very good birds. I have had hatchery stock too in the past and they were good (maybe I was lucky) but I think my pure birds are much nicer. I do interact will all of my birds. They are all special to me. My males aren't big crowers. They do crow in the mornings and when they see us but I think it's because they are asking for treats as they all usually get treats most every day. ("don't forget about us").

Anyone going to the December Connersville, In poultry show with a good hen/pullet they would be willing to sell ? I need one more to finish out my breeding pen.

Same date as the Knoxville show. I believe the Knoxville show is the RIR National, or at least it was supposed to be. There will be a good number of outstanding Reds there. I know we intend to go.

Since you're in Indiana, why not contact SallyinIndiana, a BYC member here. She has outstanding birds from Ron Fogle's line from Rickey Bates. I know she has many birds to share.
