The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I'm planning on purchasing some SQ Rose comb RIR's Bantams from Duane Urch this January. How many of you have purchased RIR's from him, and if so, how did they do in the showroom? I'm considering getting 6-8.

Someone asked about Urch birds.
I have Large fowl single comb RIR'S from him. They are Heritage RIR's. They are very pretty, but, the ones I received were not going to win any shows. The correct DNA/genes are present in the Urch birds because after one good mating I have several young birds that look very good and might be winners. I'm planning too show several of them later this fall.
One could find more sophisticated birds from someone with Rademacher or Don Nelson birds. And if interested I know a person in Indiana with some Rademacher birds for sale, And, I have some pullets and cockerels of my Rademacher birds for sale right now also. Or,if you want to work with the Urch birds I have some started pullets I will sell also. I'm in Wilmington NC email me for more info.

Act quickly because breeders are thinning their flock, getting ready for fall. And, they don't want to continue to feed all their birds all winter. I think fall is the best time to get good birds at a reasonable price. They have been feed all summer and sometimes can be bought for about what it took to feed them. Also one can see what the bird looks like, something that can't be done with spring chicks.

Have you ever gotten any Rose combs? I have heard from multiple sources that his RC Heritage RIR's did very well in the showroom. I can't have roosters where I live and would prefer chicks that I can raise. My Cochin Frizzle from him is amazing, always wins Best of Breed and Best Variety. Sweetest little thing too.

The Urch birds all of them are pretty good birds. Many are the only gene pools left for the breed in the country and if you try to help a beginner out and find a breed many times I find the person who said they have them got them from URCH. So nothing really new out there. When you come to Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds I ask the question who has any? One or two people. Will they win in the show room yes in the Rose Comb class but dont think you are going to beat a single comb Red of the top three lines out there.

Here is a idea. Why dont one of you young people get a few rose comb rhode island red females and a cracker jack really nice Single Comb Male I mean a killer male and cross them onto this male and start your own line of Rose Comb R I Reds. It may take five years but we can help you pick the right combs and maintain the single comb type and in five to seven years you will have the top Rose Comb R I Reds in the USA.

I know of two lines I would love to do this with. All I need is two females and one good single comb male and its a done deal. Heck I am thinking of crossing a Rose comb hen onto one of my single comb bantam males and do the same thing.

They are about as rare as any large fowl out there. I mean Delawares, Lamonas, White Face Black Spanish. White Miniorcas. Rose Comb Brown Leghorns. They are just not many who have them. My question is why do people want to get large fowl from the least popular breeds alive on earth today.

Is it the Pictures you guys see? Is it the write up by the web sites on these birds. What is it.????

I for the live of me can not figure out where people come up with some of the breeds they want me to locate for them. When I tell them no buddy has any they ask WHY NOT?

O well just my point of view. Sometimes the only people that have anything worth looking at are the feed store chickens.

We will keep on looking.

If anyone has Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds who can share some eggs or chicks this spring please come forward.

I showed pictures of my Rose Comb pen a couple of weeks ago. I have two pens of Rhode Island Reds; a Rose Comb pen and a Single Comb pen. In the Rose Comb pen I have a RC cock bird, a RC hen, and 2 SC hens. I have recently hatched some of these and got both SC and RC (meaning the cock bird is heterozygous). I got my reds from Trish Dusil, who got them directly from Mr. Underwood in the spring of 2010. I plan on keeping this line pure and keeping the 2 pens separate so when I need to outcross, I will be able to find an Underwood Red. (It seems few have the Underwood line). When I have more RC pullets to add to the pen, the SC hens will come out. My desire is to create a homozygous Rose Comb line.

I too, was a Biology teacher (like Mr.Blosi shared with us that Mr. Underwood was) and hope to be back in the classroom next Fall.

Bob, you know I've got some RC reds, but won't be selling anything until at least next fall, maybe longer. The dog attack really put me behind.

I need to get some pictures of what I have left I guess so you can help me see where I need to go now that I lost my top birds.

Thank you thats two folks we know of I think there are two more on this board. One from the mid west and does anyone know of a strain in Maine? Carlow large fowl Rose Combs? Did anyone ever get some from him?

Urch, Radamaker sells them. Charlie V. has some in Minn but have not heard from him in a while. I lost his email address with the computer change over of software. He hatched his like pop corn and gave up the R I Whites and Light Brahmas which did not do so well.

Keep them coming we will not be able to suppy the demand unless we have a list of names. Even if you only have been raising them a year or two. Chickens are chickens unless they come from a feed store.
