Banty chicken luv.--
No I don't have any rose combs I haven't seen any that I thought were that outstanding to interest me. Like B Blosi said they might win the rose comb veity but not the LF RIR breed. The single comb seems to dominate that area. I understand that at one time ,years ago, there were far more rose comb RIR's then there were single combs that were being shown. And, that there were even some pea comb RIR's. Now, the best RIR's are single comb. At Lucasville this month there were only a few rose combs there. They were owned and shown by A. Rademacher and I believe at least some of them sold to a friend of mine.
To my way of thinking it is hard enough to find superior single comb, Large fowl RIR's. I don't need the heartache of trying to find rose combs that measure up to the single combs ability.

Does anyone know what line Horstmans RC RIR come from? I have read posts about speculations, but is anyone sure?

Most probly Chris 09 would be the one to get that info from he has commented on them before I don't know how far back ago but it was on here he was also going to try to get some info on the Horstman SC Reds too, but I have never followed up on that with him. Maybe he'll be on here soon, if not PM him he likes to help out fellow poultry folks.

ETA hey there Jim I knew I'd get a response from you, and yes I know your situation and how busy you are too, that was the jest behind my post LOL

I'm glad all the ones folks get to post have nice pretty tails. my girls, the BRs and Reds had a tail feather plucking party and all look like crap now. I hope that soon they will get some new ones in so I could share some pics of my pride and joys on here too LOL

Dicks birds my guess is he got a bird here and there and crossed them or even crossed them onto his single combs. He is good friends with Tim Bowles and about four years ago he showed a super nice Single Comb male at the Michigan State Fair and when I talked to him he said O I get one here and there and crossed them in. I have had them for years. Dont sound logical to me as I wondered if he got some of my birds that were floating around the mid west that I sold people years ago. He sure looked like some of my old Reese birds.

I hate that when people say that. That is a old trick to distract you when asking questions. I use to send my second best red male to a guy in Ohio named Zelotes Esyhmeyer ever fall. He would show the heck out of it and when asked where he got the male he said a Mr. Brown in California. Findly one day I got a phone call from a guy named Blick in Ohio asking me if I ever ship ed Reds and White Rocks to Ohio and I said yes to Zelotes. He said thats what we guys thought.

Hope this helps as far as Rose Combs go he has a good strain. He is a excellent person to get chicks or eggs from as he is at least selling you standard breed birds so you are not getting anything in the feed store department of quality.

What speculations have you read?

I have Horstman Stock, I'v been breeding them for sometime now. Dick's Rose Combs are out of Tim Bowls and Ricky Bates stock.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tim bred some of Denny Myers stock into them.

I am going about this the lazy way without reading through the whole thread.I have looked and looked in my area for some really nice Show Quality RIR's.So can anyone give me a few names of people that ship chicks or in driving distance of Georgia? I would want to know the lines and all that good stuff. This would be greatly appeciated!!!!

I have looked at a lot of pics of hatchlings and noticed a variance in coloring, markings of the chicks.I am wondering what is the connection, if there is one, between the down color of chicks and the final coloring of adult RIRs? Is there any particular coloring or markings on chicks that I should look for to indicate how they will color out as adults?
